can i take ayurvedic medicine during pregnancy - #25423

Lincoln

I am really confused about something and hope someone can help. I just found out I’m pregnant, and it's super exciting but also a bit overwhelming. I have this long history of chronic pain and anxiety, and I usually rely on Ayurvedic medicine for relief. I read so many different things online, and I can't figure out if I can take ayurvedic medicine during pregnancy. Like, I’ve been using turmeric and ashwagandha for ages, but now I’m worried! My doctor said certain herbs might not be safe, but I’m scared to stop the Ayurvedic stuff cold turkey. I feel like it really helps with my overall wellbeing and maybe even the anxiety about the pregnancy. I’ve been trying to find a balanced approach, but there’s just so much info out there. Can I take ayurvedic medicine during pregnancy, or should I avoid it entirely? Has anyone else gone through this? Would love some real experiences or advice!

It’s definitely understandable to feel overwhelmed with all the information out there, especially when it comes to taking care of yourself and your baby during pregnancy! It’s true that some Ayurvedic herbs are generally not recommended during pregnancy, because they can have strong effects on the body that might not be safe for the developing baby. Your doctor is right that certain herbs require particular caution.

Turmeric, for example, is generally considered safe in culinary amounts, but larger doses, such as the ones found in supplements, might stimulate the womb or affect hormones. With ashwagandha, there’s more caution; again, small amounts might be okay, but high doses could potentially lead to complications due to its effects on the endocrine system and uterine contractions.

Instead of stopping everything cold turkey and losing the balance in your wellbeing, it’s best to work closely with both your Ayurvedic practitioner and your medical doctor. They can help you navigate which herbs or formulations might be safe for you to include or modify during this period. You could also consider safer alternatives for anxiety and chronic pain, such as a personalized yoga routine or meditation, complimented with a diet suitable for your dosha and pregnancy.

Always ensure any home remedies or herbs are run by a professional experienced with pregnancy, as it’s a delicate time. Avoid self-prescribing or increasing doses without discussing it with your healthcare provider. Take special note of how your body is reacting to any changes, adjusting as per your unique needs and comfort. All the best on your pregnancy journey!
