When a woman around the age of 48 experiences irregular or absent periods, it might indeed signal the approach of menopause, which is a natural phase occurring around that age. During this time, hormonal fluctuations are common, often leading to irregular menstrual cycles. However, it’s crucial to consider other factors such as stress, nutritional imbalances, or underlying health conditions which can also contribiute to irregular periods.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, the transition into menopause is viewed as a period where the Vata dosha can become aggravated. This may cause symptoms such as irregular cycles, insomnia, mood swings or hot flashes. To manage these symptons and promote a smoother transition, Ayurveda suggests certain lifestyle and dietary changes.

First, encourage your mother to focus on a Vata-pacifying diet. This includes nourishing, warm, and easily digestible foods like cooked grains (rice, quinoa), dairy, and stewed fruits. She should avoid dry and raw foods, caffeine, and reduce intake of processed sugar, as these can exacerbate Vata imbalance.

Maintaining a regular daily routine with proper rest is crucial; Ayurveda places importance on going to bed by 10 PM and waking early in the morning. Gentle physical activities such as yoga, pranayama, and meditation can also be beneficial in balancing emotions and promoting relaxation. Abhyanga, or self-massage with warm sesame oil, may also support hormone balance, calm the nervous system, and enhance skin health.

Moreover, herbal remedies like Ashwagandha, Shatavari, and Guduchi can provide support during this transition. These herbs help balance hormones, strengthen the reproductive system, and support overall resilience against stress.

Even though menopusal symptoms are common at this age, it’s important to seek a medical evaluation to rule out other potential causes or health conditions. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare professional to ensure a holistic approach to your mother’s health.

At 48 years old, it’s quite possible that your mom could be experiencing perimenopause, which is the transitional phase leading up to menopause. During this time, many women notice changes in their menstrual cycle like irregular periods or missed cycles. Perimenopause is a natural process, marking the end of reproductive years, but it’s still important to rule out other potential causes, such as hormonal imbalances or underlying health issues.

From a Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, we would consider the balance of doshas, particularly vata, which tends to become more prominent during this stage of life. Irregular periods can be viewed as a sign of vata imbalance, which might benefit from supportive and balancing practices.

First, encourage her to maintain a regular daily routine, including consistent meal times and sleep schedules. This consistency can help stabilize vata dosha and support hormonal balance. Second, ensure she is eating a warm, nourishing diet rich in healthy fats, whole grains, and seasonal fruits and vegetables, avoiding excessively cold, dry, or leftover foods.

Including Ayurvedic herbs like Ashwagandha or Shatavari in her diet, under proper guidance, may support hormonal balance and help mitigate symptoms. These herbs are traditionally used to balance hormones, support vitality, and stabilize mood swings common during perimenopause.

If she experiences other symptoms like excessive bloating, weight changes, or mood disturbance, consulting a healthcare provider for an evaluation would be wise. In summary, although approaching menopause is likely, other conditions should be ruled out, especially if there’s sudden changes or discomfort than usual.
