I have missed my periods and need consultation for it. - #31563

Sakshi

Hello Doctor, I wanted to consult you regarding my periods. My last period was from 4th to 6th August, and since then I haven’t got my next period. I had sex using the withdrawal method on 23rd August and 1st September. As of today (10th September), I haven’t experienced any pregnancy symptoms, only occasional mild abdominal pain. I am concerned whether this delay is due to my irregular cycles or a possible pregnancy. Could you please guide me on this.. my age is 21.

Missing a period can be concerning, especially when you’re unsure of the cause. Since your last period was in early August and you’ve had intercourse using the withdrawal method recently, pregnancy is a possibility, although not certain. Withdrawal is not foolproof as a contraceptive method, as pre-ejaculate fluid can contain sperm. It’s advisable to take a home pregnancy test to confirm or rule out pregnancy. It can be done at this point as it’s been more than two weeks since the first instance of intercourse you’re concerned about.

If the test is negative and irregular cycles are a recurring issue, it’s important to consider factors like stress, dietary habits, weight fluctuations, sleep patterns, and exercise levels, all of which can impact menstrual regularity. In Ayurveda, irregular periods may be related to a Vata imbalance. You may want to focus on routines that pacify Vata. This might include warming foods, moderately spiced with ginger, cinnamon, and black pepper to stimulate Agni (digestive fire) and foster regularity.

Adopting a regular eating schedule helps too. Eating at the same time everyday maintains regulation in your body. Avoid excessive cold foods and instead opt for warm, cooked meals. Incorporate grounding activities - like yoga or gentle walking. Abdominal pains mild, but if they persist or intensify, further investigation might be needed.

Herbal remedies such as Ashoka (Saraca indica) or Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) can be supportive for the reproductive system to promote menstrual regularity. Consult an Ayurvedic practitioner before consuming herbs for proper dosages and suitability to your constitution.

If no pregnancy, has been confirmed and menstrual irregularity persists, a consultation with a healthcare professional would be prudent — they can provide a more comprehensive evaluation. It’s essential to address any ongoing concerns with personalized approach based on your unique health situation.

A delayed period can have multiple causes, and understanding your situation from an Ayurvedic perspective provides a holistic view. Given the possibility of pregnancy due to the withdrawal method’s known higher failure rate, it’s advisable to first confirm or rule out pregnancy with a reliable test. That’s the simplest first step in resolving this concern.

From an Ayurvedic standpoint, irregular menstrual cycles might be influenced by imbalances in the doshas, particularly vata and pitta. This could disrupt the normal functioning of the reproductive system. Mild abdominal pain could suggest vata aggravation. Consider embracing more routine-based practices that help maintain balance, like waking up and sleeping at consistent times, which helps stabilize vata. Assess your diet for an excess of spicy, oily, or fast foods, which could disturb pitta and affect menstrual regularity. Favor warm, cooked meals and ensure regular meal times to support agni, or digestive fire.

As supporting measures, stay hydrated and practice gentle yoga to alleviate stress, which also helps dhatus, or tissues, remain in healthy condition. Herbal remedies such as ashwagandha or shatavari may aid menstrual balance, but it’s important these are taken under guidance from a professional. If discomfort persists or you suspect pregnancy complications, consult a healthcare provider promptly. It is crucial to ensure nothing serious is overlooked and appropriate care is taken.
