what are the disadvantage of masturbation - #37634

Paisley

I am really confused about something. A couple months ago, I started noticing that I was feeling kinda low-energy and unfocused, and I wondered if it was linked to my habits. I've always been somewhat casual about masturbation – like, it never felt like a big deal. But then I started reading about what are the disadvantage of masturbation, and honestly, I'm feeling a bit freaked out. I mean, I do it a few times a week, and maybe it's just habit, but now I’m questioning if that's affecting my mind or body in some way? Like, my friends sometimes joke about it, but they don’t seem to realize that it might actually have some bad side effects. I've found myself feeling more anxious and not really interested in things I used to enjoy. I read about how it could mess with your motivation or energy levels, and I seriously don't want to feel like this anymore. Can anyone explain what are the disadvantage of masturbation in a way that makes sense to me? Also, is it likely to take some time to bounce back if I decide to cut back? Just looking for some thought here, thanks!

Masturbation, when practiced in moderation, isn’t typically considered harmful. However, excessive indulgence can sometimes lead to emotional or physical concerns. From an Ayurvedic perspective, excessive masturbation is believed to impact one’s Ojas, which is the essence of vitality and immunity, potentially leading to decreased energy or vitality. The ancient texts suggest that an imbalance in Vata dosha may occur with overindulgence, which might explain symptoms like feeling anxious, tired, or less motivated.

The psychological effects you’re experiencing, such as anxiety and reduced interest in activities, could indeed be related but they also might be due to other factors like stress, diet, or lifestyle habits. It’s important to consider the holistic nature of your wellbeing, beyond just one habit.

If you’ve decided to cut back, here’s a few Ayurvedic recommendations that may support you:

1. Diet and Nutrition: Focus on nourishing foods that enhance Ojas. Include almonds, dates, and milk, which are considered strengthening and revitalizing. Avoid excessively spicy, salty, or fried foods that might aggravate Vata.

2. Daily Routine: Aim to establish a consistent daily routine. Go to bed and wake up at the same times to promote restful sleep, which is crucial for mental clarity and focus.

3. Herbal Support: Consume herbs like Ashwagandha or Shatavari. Ashwagandha is known for its adaptogenic properties that help with stress and energy, while Shatavari is nourishing and rejuvenating.

4. Meditation and Mindfulness: Incorporate meditation or yoga into your daily life. This helps to center the mind, reduce anxiety, and increase motivation. Pranayama or breathing exercises can also be particularly grounding for an overactive Vata.

5. Gradual Reduction: Rather than abruptly stopping the habit, consider gradually reducing frequency, which can make the transition easier on both your body and mind.

Remember, any significant changes in energy or mood should be discussed with a healthcare provider to ensure there’s no underlying health issue. Balancing your routine and incorporating these practices might gradually help improve your energy and focus over time.

Masturbation can be a natural and harmless activity for many, but concerns like yours are not uncommon. According to the Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, any habit that becomes excessive can disrupt the balance of the body’s doshas—vata, pitta, and kapha—which in turn might impact physical and mental health. Regarding masturbation, doing it frequently might increase the vata and pitta doshas, sometimes leading to issues like fatigue, lack of focus, or even feelings of anxiety.

The rise in vata, known for its mobile and irregular qualities, may contribute to mental instability or restlessness, which could explain your sense of low energy and anxiety. Meanwhile, a heightened pitta can drive an over-stimulated mind that struggles to relax or let go, affectng your motivation and peace. For some individuals, regular sexual release may deplete ojas, the vital essence in Ayurveda associated with vitality and stability.

Should you decide to cut back, the time to ‘bounce back’ varies for everyone. Generally, it may take a few weeks to notice positive changes as your system finds equilibrium. During this period, focus on grounding practices: consuming warm, cooked meals that satisfy ‘agni’ or digestive fire; maintain a consistent sleep schedule; and engage in moderate physical activity like yoga or tai chi. Abhyanga (oil massage) using sesame oil is also beneficial to soothe heightened vata, helping restore energy reserves.

Take time to observe changes gradually as you experiment with different approaches to care for your holistic health. But, if your symptoms persist or worsen, it’s wise to consult a healthcare professional for personalized guidance.
