Low libido can have numerous causes, and in Ayurveda, we often first consider imbalances in the doshas. For women, a decline in libido often points to disturbances in Vata and Pitta doshas, or sometimes a depletion of Ojas, the essence of vitality. To address this, focus on balancing your doshas and enhancing ojas through diet, lifestyle, and herbal remedies.
First, consider incorporating more warming, grounding foods into your diet. Foods like sweet potatoes, ghee, milk, nuts, and seeds can help nourish and stabilize Vata. Avoid overly spicy or oily foods that might exacerbate Pitta. Try cooking with saffron or cardamom which can enhance the taste and slightly improve libido over time.
Herbal supplements can also be beneficial. Ashwagandha is well-known in Ayurveda for boosting energy and balancing stress hormones that can affect libido. Shatavari, specifically recommended for women, helps maintain hormonal balance and nourish the reproductive tissue. You can take these herbs in powder or capsule form—typically, about 1/2 teaspoon of Ashwagandha and 1 to 2 teaspoons of Shatavari daily with warm milk or water is a common recommendation.
Consider practicing Abhyanga, a self-oil massage with sesame oil, which calms Vata and enhances circulation. Focus the massage on your lower abdomen and pelvic area, ideally at least 3 times a week. Complement this with relaxation techniques like pranayama or meditation to support mental tranquility.
Lastly, make sure you’re getting consistent sleep and hydrating well, as both are crucial for maintaining healthy libido. Ensure your lifestyle supports your natural rhythm and energy peak times, avoiding overexertion and stress. If available, consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner to tailor these recommendations to your individual prakriti and any specific health conditions you might have.
