what happens if we eat multani mitti - #38330

Natalie

I am really curious and a bit worried. Lately, I've been hearing a lot about multani mitti and how it's used in various beauty regimens and skincare. A friend of mine mentioned that she even uses it internally sometimes. I mean, I know it’s popular for external use, like face packs and stuff, but what happens if we eat multani mitti? Like, is it safe? Last week, I had an interesting experience actually. I accidentally mixed a little bit of the multani mitti into my smoothie instead of the protein powder. At first, it was just a little pinch, but then it became a bit too much because it got clumpy! 🙈 It didn't taste great, and I mostly just choked it down. But now I'm feeling slightly uneasy about it. I haven't had any significant symptoms, just a little stomach discomfort here and there, which I honestly figured was just from rushing my breakfast. I can't help but wonder if there are any long-term effects or anything serious that could happen. I mean, I read something online about it being great for detoxing skin, but what about detoxing the insides? 😂 Is there any way to know what happens if we eat multani mitti? Should I be looking out for specific symptoms or just stop eating it altogether?? Thanks for any advice!

Eating Multani Mitti, or Fuller’s Earth, is a practice not recommended. While it might have benefits for skin, it’s not formulated for internal consumption. Ingesting it can lead to various health issues. Being an absorbent clay, Multani Mitti can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb essential nutrients and might cause digestive problems, like stomach discomfort which you’ve mentiond. In Ayurveda, digestion is critical. Consuming substances that obstruct digestion or nutrient absorption can lead to imbalances, affecting Agni - the digestive fire.

Symptoms to watch for include persistent stomach pain, constipation, or difficulty digesting food. If you encounter persistent issues, consult an Ayurvedic practitioner or a medical professional. Multani Mitti might contain impurities or heavy metals harmful to your health, another reason to avoid ingestion.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, if you accidently ingest substances like Multani Mitti, observing your body’s response is crucial. Ensure you maintain a balanced diet that supports good digestion and look out for signs of Vata or Pitta imbalance – such as dryness, bloating, or acidity.

Detoxing the body is essential in Ayurveda, but it involves other means like healthy diet, warm water or herbal teas, and detoxifying herbs, not clays meant for topical use. Consider incorporating Trikatu, a combination of black pepper, long pepper, and ginger, to help enhance Agni and balance digestion after unintended consumption.

For future, it’s wise to ensure beauty and detox products are used for their intended purpose. If you continue feeling uneasy or develop unusual symptoms, seeking immediate medical advice is always the safest. Making dietary decisions that align with your constitution can help maintain domain of health. Also, be cautious with online advice - always verify the source and its relevance to your individual needs.

Multani mitti, also known as Fuller’s Earth, is indeed commonly used in external beauty treatments for its skin-soothing and cleansing properties. However, consuming multani mitti is not advised, especially in significant amounts, due to its composition and potential impact on your health. It’s primarily composed of various clays and minerals that can indeed absorb oil and impurities, which benefits the skin but may not suit the internal digestive environment.

If you’ve accidentally ingested a small amount and you’re feeling fine apart from minor stomach discomfort, there’s probably no immediate cause for worry. However, consuming it in larger quantities might lead to issues such as gastrointestinal blockage, mineral imbalance, or digestive irritation. These effects stem from the body’s inability to adequately process the clay-like substances that multani mitti contains.

Digestive disturbances could also arise because the clay might interfere with the normal digestive process, potentially affecting the absorption of essential nutrients. Prolonged consumption might lead to deficiencies or metabolic imbalances, which is why monitoring your body’s reaction is important.

It’s advisable to avoid ingesting multani mitti intentionally in the future, as its benefits are not meant to be internal. Instead, ensure a balanced diet with high fiber content and adequate hydration to support natural digestive health and detoxification. If any new or worsening symptoms occur—such as severe abdominal pain, nausea, or changes in bowel habits—consult a healthcare professional promptly.

In the Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition, focusing on maintaining a balance of the doshas and supporting the digestive fire (agni) is crucial. Opt for dietary practices and herbal supports harmonious with your prakriti for natural detoxification. Turmeric, triphala, and ginger are traditional choices that can enhance digestion and overall metabolism safely when consumed appropriately. Discontinue any internal use of multani mitti and ensure a holistic approach towards well-being through personalized dietary and lifestyle changes.
