It is true that some Ayurvedic medicines, especially the ones called bhasmas, contain metals like gold, mercury, or sulfur. However, these are traditionally prepared with precise processes meant to detoxify and make them safe for consumption. In Ayurveda, these metals, when properly used, are believed to have therapeutic effects, but the preparation methods are critical to ensure they do no harm.
Your concerns, especially after hearing reports of liver disease, are entirely understandable. Incorrectly prepared or inadequately tested products can cause harm. It’s essential then to ensure that any bhasma consumed is of high quality and comes from a reputable source known for their adherence to classical preparation methods with stringent quality control.
Given your situation with IBS and concerns about these medicines, you might want to reconsider using bhasmas, especially if you have any discomfort or symptoms that raise concern. You could opt for Ayurvedic remedies free from such metals. Consider herbal formulations geared specifically towards improving digestion and managing IBS symptoms, as there are numerous options that don’t contain heavy metals.
Looking at your diet may also help. Try to favor warm, easy-to-digest foods, and avoid foods which are spicy or very oily. Keeping your stress level low may benefit, since stress often exacerbates IBS symptoms. Practices like yoga or meditation could be incorporated into your daily routine to support your digestion.
If you decide to use Ayurvedic medicines, please consult with a doctor who has thorough experience and proof of the safety and quality of their prescriptions. Additionally, remaining under the care of a licensed healthcare professional while using these treatments is recommended. If symptoms worsen, immediate medical attention should be sought.
