can we take shatavari during periods - #40762

Brooklyn

I am having this dilemma about shatavari and my periods. Last month, I started taking shatavari because I heard it’s good for women’s health and can help with hormonal balance. But then, out of nowhere, my period was super painful, like way worse than usual! I read somewhere that some herbs can mess with your cycle, and now I’m stressed. Can we take shatavari during periods? I mean, I thought it was supposed to be good for us, but with these cramps, I don't know if I should continue. I’ve also been feeling kinda bloated, and it seems like the cramps don’t go away even after taking my usual pain relief meds. Is it possible that shatavari’s causing all this? I really just want to feel better. Some friends swear by it, though. They claim it helps with their symptoms, and one even said she uses it regularly before and during her periods and has no issues at all. I’m wondering if my experience is just a fluke or if shatavari really isn’t suitable when cramps are intense. Has anyone else had this kinda experience? Could it be a sign that I shouldn't take shatavari when my period hits? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Shatavari, scientifically known as Asparagus racemosus, plays a significant role in Ayurveda as a women’s health tonic. Generally, it is well-regarded for enhancing reproductive health, balancing hormones, and supporting menstrual cycles. However, like any individual with unique constitutional makeup, your response to Shatavari can vary based on your dosha, current state of balance or imbalance, and underlying health conditions.

In theory, Shatavari is not known to worsen menstrual cramps. Actually, its cooling, anti-inflammatory properties are thought to alleviate such symptoms. However, sometimes when introducing an herb, your body might go through an initial phase of adjustment. This doesn’t mean Shatavari is causing the cramps, but it might be interacting with your body in a way that makes you more sensitive to an existing imbalance or issue.

Your experience could be an indication of excess ama (toxins), or perhaps an aggravated Vata dosha. If the pain persists, it would be wise to ensure your agni (digestive fire) is strong, as weak digestion can lead to accumulation of toxins and exacerbate menstrual discomfort. Focus on eating warm, easily digestible foods, and incorporate spices like cumin, coriander and ginger to help enhance digestion.

For immediate menstrual relief, you can try applying a warm castor oil pack on your abdomen; castor oil is considered effective in relieving pain and reducing inflammation. Taking a gentle herb such as ginger tea can also be soothing during periods.

If you continue to experience pronounced symptoms, consider stopping Shatavari for the moment and gving your system a break, observe how your body responds. If there’s a significant improvement, it may be worth consulting with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner to tailor an approach to better suit your constitution and current health. They can also explore if there might be other underlying issues that need addressing.

As always, if the pain persists or intensifies, don’t hesitate to consult your healthcare provider to rule out any other potential causes. Your well-being should always come first.

Taking shatavari during your periods can indeed be beneficial for many women, as it’s traditionally known in Siddha-Ayurvedic practice to support female reproductive health, including hormonal balance and alleviating certain menstrual symptoms. However, the effects of shatavari can vary due to differences in individual doshas, agni (digestive fire), and overall body constitution. It’s possible that the herbs interaction with your body’s current condition could have led to the symptoms you’re experiencing.

Shatavari primarily balances pitta and slightly increases kapha doshas, which might sometimes result in increased kapha symptoms like bloating or more intense cramps if one’s constitutional balance or current state is already leaned towards excess kapha. You might be experiencing an accentuation of symptoms due to your body’s specific reaction to the herb. Every individual’s response can be different, as your friends’ experiences suggest.

Considering your strong cramps and persistent bloating, it might be wise to pause taking shatavari for a cycle, and observe any changes. Keep track of your dietary and lifestyle habits during this time as well, ensuring you’re not inadvertently fueling pitta or kapha excess — like heavy, oily foods excessive chillies, or physical inactivity.

It’s crucial, especially in cases of severe or disruptive menstrual pain, to consult with a healthcare provider to rule out underlying conditions that might require different treatments. If you choose to resume shatavari consider starting with a smaller dose, monitoring how your body responds more closely. Combining shatavari with a herb like ginger, which aids digestion and balances kapha-pitta, might also be beneficial. Ultimately, calibrating herbal intake to your specific doshic balance could maximize benefits and minimize any discomforts.
