is mulethi good for cough - #41817
I am struggling with this nagging cough that just doesn’t seem to go away. It started after I caught a cold about two weeks ago. At first, it was just annoying, but now it’s super persistent, and I find myself waking up at night coughing. I tried honey and lemon, but it’s still hanging around like that friend who overstays their welcome! A friend mentioned mulethi and said that is mulethi good for cough? I'm not sure how to use it or if it would actually help. I read that it has soothing properties and may even help with respiratory issues, but will it really make a difference? I also heard that I might need to take it with something like warm water or milk, but what’s the best way to prepare it? Do I just boil, chew, or what? And how often should I be taking it? Have any of you guys used mulethi for cough before? I’m hoping to avoid seeing a doctor unless absolutely necessary, but this cough is driving me a bit nuts. Would love any advice!

Mulethi, known commonly as licorice root, has indeed been used historically in Ayurveda for its calming effect on the throat and its ability to soothe coughs. Its sweet nature makes it effective in pacifying aggravated Vata and Pitta doshas, which could be contributing to your persistent cough. The glycyrrhizin content in mulethi is known for anti-inflammatory properties and it’s demulcent effect, which can create a soothing coat on the irritated throat tissues.
To use mulethi for a cough, you have several options. One simple method is to create an infusion. Take a small stick of mulethi (or about 1-2 teaspoons of mulethi powder if thats more convenient), and boil it in a cup of water for around 10-15 minutes. Strain the liquid and sip it throughout the day. Consuming this warm can help provide relief to your throat. For many, taking this 2-3 times a day works well.
Another approach involves taking a small piece of mulethi stick and chewing it like a lozenge. By doing so, the saliva mixing with mulethi can gradually ease throat discomfort.
If you’re opting for mulethi tea with milk, add a small piece of mulethi into boiling milk (without sugar), and allow it to simmer. Consuming this drink warm before bed may also assist in reducing night-time coughing.
However, avoid consuming mulethi in large quantities as it can potentially raise blood pressure and affect electrolyte balance, especially with prolonged use. If you have underlying health conditions, like high blood pressure or are pregnant, caution is advised and consulting a healthcare practitioner is recommended.
Should the cough persist or worsen, do consider seeing a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying issues. Persistent coughs warrant broader evaluations to exclude conditions that need medical intervention. Always match any remedy with your unique body and consult if ayurveda needs aligning with any ongoing treatment.
