Seeking Holistic Solutions for Parasite Infestation with Vidanga - #41831
Hello, I have been diagnosed with parasites, although I don't know which type. I've traveled to third world counties, in addition to walking bare foot and having a variety of pets during my lifetime. As I don't choose to take pharmaceuticals and prefer a more holistic approach, my research led me to the herb Vidanga. There's a "magnitude" of websites offering info: regarding dosing, application etc... My question is.. does Vidanga address all parasites and due to the heating quality of this herb, are there contraindications taking this with Pitta/Vata dosha? And if not, what is the approximate time required to irradiate this infestation? Thank-you for your assistance with to my inquiry. Warm regards, Carol

Vidanga, or Embelia ribes, is indeed a recognized herb in Ayurveda for its antiparasitic properties, and is particularly effective in expelling worms and parasites. While Vidanga can target a broad spectrum of parasitic infections, it’s essential to understand that its efectiveness could vary based on the specific type of parasite infecting you. Considering that you don’t know the exact type, using Vidanga might help, but it’s also important to integrate other aspects of Ayurvedic treatment.
Regarding your dosha concerns, Vidanga is indeed pungent and heating, which might aggravate Pitta and Vata if not managed carefully. If you have a predominant Pitta or Vata constitution, you need to balance Vidanga’s heating nature. Pairing Vidanga with cooling herbs such as Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) or Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) can help balance this warmth, making it more dosha-appropriate.
In terms of dosage, it’s generally recommended to start with 1-2 grams of Vidanga powder once daily, preferably taken with warm water or honey. However, it’s imperative to consult with a local ayurvedic practitioner for precise dosing tailored to your condition.
About the duration, it’s a little tricky — the treatment times vary. You could expect to continue treatment for at least a few weeks, but this entirely depends on your response and the specific nature of the parasitic infestation. Also, consider dietary and lifestyle modifications such as favoring easily digestible foods, avoiding raw or undercooked meals, and practicing good hygiene to enhance this therapy.
Remember, if you experience any severe symptoms like rapid weight loss, persistent weakness, or signs of malnutrition, it’s vital to urgently consult conventional medical advice. Keeping a close eye on your symptoms and staying informed will help you navigate this process safely.
Thank-you, I’ll definitely try your recommendations and see how I feel in a few weeks and if the symptoms lessen…
Thank-you for your response. You mentioned “may help” as opposed to treating the condition? I will proceed with your recommendations and I do appreciate your feedback re: my Pitta/ Vata constitution also…
Incidentally, I was looking at the profiles of the Ayuvedic doc’s listed on this sight and liked the perspectives of 2 very much, one of which was yours… I appreciate both a traditional, but also a scientific and “energy” based approach to healing. You seem to have the first 2 covered! So thank-you and I may use your services in the future…
Respectfully, Carolina
