Yes – mild dry skin is a common side effect of Bruhat Varunadi Kadha. It has strong diuretic & detox herbs (Varuna, Punarnava, Gokshura) which increase urine output, body loses moisture and skin becomes dry & flaky, especially in first 2–4 weeks. This is not dangerous, just Vata aggravation from drying action.
Add these medicines with Kadha Shatavari Kalpa – 10 gm morning + night with warm milk Ghee – 1–2 tsp in every meal + 1 tsp warm water morning empty stomach Coconut oil OR sesame oil – gentle full-body massage nightly and leave on or wash morning
Daily Must-Do Drink coconut water 200–300 ml daily (natural hydration) No hot showers – use lukewarm water Avoid tea/coffee after 4 PM
Bruhat Varunadi Kadha is excellent for PCOD – dryness is temporary & easily fixed with Shatavari + ghee.

Hello 🙏
Yes, dry skin and flaking can happen while taking Bruhat Varunadi Kadha, especially in people with Vata-dominant constitution.
Why this can happen - Bruhat Varunadi Kadha is Ushna (hot), Ruksha (drying) and Lekhana (scraping) in nature - It reduces Kapha & Meda, which is why it is used in PCOD But at the same time, it can increase Vata, leading to: - Dry skin - Flaking - Tightness or mild itching - Since you are taking 2–3 liters water, dehydration is not the main cause here.
What you should do (very important) 1️⃣ Balance Vata while continuing treatment Do not stop suddenly, but modify: - Reduce dose if you are taking high dose 👉 Usually 10–15 ml twice daily after food is safer Always take it after meals, not empty stomach
2️⃣ Add internal lubrication (Snehan) Choose ONE of the following (daily): - ½–1 tsp cow ghee with warm water at night OR - ½ tsp sesame oil with warm water at bedtime (if constipation is also present) This will protect skin + gut without affecting PCOD treatment.
3️⃣ External oiling (very effective) - Apply sesame oil or almond oil lightly on body before bath - Leave for 15–20 minutes, then bathe with mild soap
4️⃣ Diet changes (important) Increase: - Warm, cooked foods - Moong dal, rice, ghee - Stewed fruits (apple, pear)
Avoid excess: - Dry snacks - Very spicy food - Coffee, bakery items

Hello, Yes—Bruhat Varunadi Kadha can indirectly cause or worsen dry skin in some patients, especially when taken for PCOD.
Your symptoms of dryness with flaking for 1–4 weeks, despite adequate water intake (2–3 liters/day), suggest Vata aggravation and Rukshata (dryness) caused by the Lekhana (scraping), Ushna (hot), and drying nature of Varunadi formulations.
👉 This is not an allergy, but a known functional effect when Vata increases while Kapha–Meda are being reduced.
🔎 Why This Happens Bruhat Varunadi Kadha: • Reduces Kapha & Meda (useful in PCOD) • Is drying and hot in potency • Can reduce Snigdha guna (oiliness) of skin and tissues • Leads to skin dryness, flaking, hair dryness if not balanced This is more common in: • Lean body type • Vata-prone individuals • Those on restricted diet / weight-loss regimens
💊 Management & Corrections (You can continue the medicine with balance measures) * Internal Balancing (Very Important) 1.Add cow ghee – 1 tsp daily with lunch (Prevents excessive dryness without affecting PCOD treatment) 2.Ashwagandha Churna – ½ tsp with warm milk at bedtime (Balances Vata, supports hormones and skin) 3.Guduchi / Amalaki Churna –½ tsp once daily after breakfast (Prevents skin dryness and supports metabolism)
👉 Continue Bruhat Varunadi Kadha, but do not increase dose.
If Dryness Is Significant • Reduce Varunadi Kadha dose to once daily (morning, empty stomach) • Avoid taking it at night
🌿 External Skin Care (Essential) Daily Abhyanga (Oil application) • Sesame oil or almond oil • Apply before bath, 3–4 times/week After-bath moisturizer • Coconut oil or Ayurvedic cream (no fragrance) Avoid hot water baths • Use lukewarm water only
🥗 Diet Modifications ❌ Avoid • Excess dry foods • Only salads / raw foods • Very spicy food • Late nights ✅ Include • Warm cooked meals • Milk (if tolerated) • Ghee, soaked almonds (4–5/day) • Vegetable soups
🧘🏻♀️ Lifestyle & Yoga • Adequate sleep (before 10:30 pm) • Gentle yoga – Vajrasana – Baddha Konasana • Anulom Vilom – 10 minutes daily
✨ Dry skin during Varunadi Kadha therapy is manageable and reversible. With proper Vata-balancing support, you can safely continue PCOD treatment.
With kind regards, Dr. Sumi MS (Ayu)
YES TAKING BRUHAT VARUNADI KADHA SYRUP CAN SOMETIMES LEAD TO DRYNESS OF SKIN AS IT WORKS TO REDUCE EXCESS FLUIDS AND BALANCE DOSHAS ITSELF IT IS NOT A SERIOUS SIDE EFFECT BUT CAN BE MANAGED
MAKE SURE YOU ARE DRINKING ENOUGH WATER THROUGHOUT THE DAY AT LEAST TWO TO THREE LITERS AND USE NATURAL MOISTURIZERS LIKE COCONUT OIL OR SESAME OIL ON SKIN DAILY BEFORE BATH TO PREVENT FLAKING
AVOID EXCESS HEAT AND HOT SHOWERS AS THEY CAN WORSEN DRYNESS INCLUDE GHEE MILK AND WARM NUTRITIOUS FOODS LIKE OATS MOONG DAL AND GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES TO SUPPORT SKIN HYDRATION
IF DRYNESS PERSISTS OR BECOMES ITCHY OR FLAKY SEVERELY YOU CAN REDUCE THE DOSE SLIGHTLY OR TAKE IT WITH WARM WATER TO MINIMIZE SIDE EFFECTS
THIS IS A MILD AND DOES NOT REQUITE YOU TO STOP THE MEDICINE COMPLETELY, BUT MOISTURIZING ANDPLENTY OF FLUID INTAKE WILL HELP SUPPORT SKIN HEALTH
- It can sometimes increase dryness in the body, especially if taken for a longer period or in higher doses. - The diuretic effect may reduce moisture in tissues, leading to dry, flaky skin in sensitive individuals. - This isn’t a “dangerous” side effect, but it does show that your body’s vata is getting aggravated.
🌸 What you can do: - Taking the kadha with a little warm water + ½ tsp ghee as anupana (vehicle). - Adding more unctuous foods (milk, ghee, sesame oil, soaked almonds, dates) to your diet. - Doing abhyanga (warm sesame oil massage) 2–3 times a week to restore skin moisture.
For polycystic disease can change to more safer and acceptable medicine. Since dryness is prominent, you can reduce the dosage, or stop it. Apply coconut oil or olive oil as full body massage. Include cow’s ghee 2-4tsp in your diet daily.
