Related Literature

Bixa orellana and antifungal activity Studies have shown that extracts of Bixa orellana (leaves, seeds, and essential oil) have antifungal activity against Candida albicans. Ethanolic and methanolic extracts can inhibit the growth of C. albicans in laboratory studies. Phytochemical constituents of Bixa orellana Phytochemical screening of Bixa orellana shows the presence of flavonoids, tannins, phenols, terpenoids, alkaloids, and carotenoids (bixin and norbixin). These compounds are known for antimicrobial and antifungal properties. Role of bixin and essential oils Bixin, a major pigment from Bixa orellana seeds, has shown moderate antifungal activity against Candida species. Essential oils containing compounds like β-caryophyllene and nerolidol also contribute to antifungal effects. Comparison with standard antifungal drugs Some studies compared Bixa orellana extracts with standard antifungal drugs such as nystatin or fluconazole and found that plant extracts showed moderate but significant inhibition of Candida albicans. Importance of plant-based antifungals Due to increasing resistance of Candida albicans to conventional antifungal drugs, medicinal plants like Bixa orellana are being studied as natural and safer alternatives.
