Healing moderate to severe acne, especially pustules and nodules, can be challenging, and Ayurveda provides an insightful perspective to managing this condition by focusing on the balance of doshas, particularly Pitta dosha, which is often aggravated in such cases. Here’s what you can consider.

First, let’s talk about your diet. Favor foods that are cooling and calming to reduce the heat generated by Pitta dosha. Incorporate fresh fruits like pears, apples, and pomegranates. Avoid spicy, oily, fried foods, and fermented items as they can exacerbate the heat. Stay well-hydrated with water infused with mint or coriander seeds as it supports detoxification.

Next, lifestyle adjustments. Ensure you’re getting adequate sleep — 7 to 8 hours is ideal. Stress can also trigger acne, try regular practices like yoga or mindfulness meditation to keep stress in check.

Herbal remedies can aid in the healing process. Applying a paste of neem powder mixed with water directly onto the blemishes can help in reducing inflammation and bacterial growth. You may also consider using sandalwood paste for its cooling properties, which soothes the skin.

Incorporate herbs like Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) or Amalaki (Indian Gooseberry) into your routine through herbal teas or supplements. They are known for their Pitta pacifying and blood purifying qualities.

Lastly, cleanliness is crucial. Gently cleanse your face twice daily with a mild, natural cleanser like gram flour and rose water—avoid scrubbing too hard. And ensure any makeup used is non-comedogenic.

Monitor your skin’s response to these changes and be patient as herbal and Ayurvedic therapies can take time to show effect. If you experience severe outbreaks or unusual symptoms, consult with a healthcare professional immediately. Balancing ayurveda with contemporary treatments may also be beneficial for some — be open to discussing this hybrid approach with a trusted practitioner.

In managing moderate to severe acne, such as pustules and nodules, it’s important to consider your dosha balance. Acne is often related to an imbalance in pitta and kapha, affecting the rakta dhatu (blood tissue) and leading to inflammation and oiliness. Following Siddha-Ayurvedic principles, the focus is on purifying the blood and supporting the balance of your body.

Firstly, incorporating herbs like neem and turmeric can greatly help. Consider taking neem and turmeric powder—one teaspoon each—mixed with warm water each morning on an empty stomach. These possess anti-inflammatory and blood-purifying properties.

Next, make dietary modifications. Reducing pitta-aggravating foods like spicy, oily, and processed foods can be beneficial. Favor fresh fruits, leafy vegetables, and cooling herbs like coriander and mint. Drinking plenty of water, about 8-10 glasses a day, aids in flushing toxins from your body.

A regular cleansing routine is crucial. Use a gentle herbal face wash containing sandalwood or rosewater twice daily to maintain the skin’s natural balance. You might consider applying a mixture of sandalwood powder and rosewater as a face mask twice a week. Leave it on for 15–20 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water.

Stress can worsen acne, so incorporate relaxation practices such as meditation or yoga into your routine. Nadi Shodhana pranayama (alternate nostril breathing) especially assists in calming the mind and balancing the doshas.

Lastly, if the acne remains resistant or worsens, it would be wise to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner in person. There might be a need for personalized internal cleansing therapies to address deeper imbalances.

Addressing acne is a holistic process—ensuring balance in lifestyle, diet, and stress levels alongside these remedies can bring about gradual, sustainable results.
