Hello I get why you’d be worried – a 2-year-old with tummy pain and constipation is super stressful for any parent. But dont worry we are here to help you out😊.

YOUR KID’S CONCERN

–Age: 2 years old –Constipated for over a month now –Tummy pain too –Eats pretty well –You’re giving them Amaltas (Cassia fistula) – one stick every four days

READ THIS CAREFULLY – IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT

Don’t give Amaltas to a 2-year-old every day.

Amaltas is a strong laxative. For little kids, it can: * Cause cramps and tummy pain * Make them dependent on it (their bowels might stop working without it) * Mess with their electrolytes if they use it a lot

Even if it’s one stick every few days, it’s still too much for a toddler.

So, no, giving Amaltas regularly to a 2-year-old isn’t safe.

WHY YOUR CHILD IS CONSTIPATED (Ayurveda’s Take)

For toddlers, constipation usually comes down to: * Vata imbalance (which means things are a bit out of whack) * Hard, dry poop * Not enough lubrication in their gut * Being scared or in pain when they go, which makes them hold it in

Ayurveda calls this Bala Vibandha.

GENTLE & SAFE AYURVEDIC HELP FOR A 2-YEAR-OLD

1. Best and Safest Option: Ghee * Give ½–1 teaspoon of cow’s ghee * Mix it into warm milk or food * Once a day

This will soften poop, nourish their insides, and it's very safe for kids.

2. Soaked Raisin Water (If they’ll drink it) * Soak 4–5 black raisins overnight * Mash them up and give them the water in the morning

3. Belly Massage * Gently rub their tummy in a clockwise direction with warm sesame or coconut oil * Once a day

WHAT TO STAY AWAY FROM

* Amaltas * Haritaki * Triphala * Any strong laxatives unless a doctor says it’s okay

EATING TIPS (These are key!)

* Give them warm, soft foods. * Make sure they drink enough water. * Limit treats like biscuits and baked goods. * Encourage them to sit on the potty after meals (don’t force it though).

THE SHORT ANSWER

Don’t give Amaltas regularly. Use ghee, adjust their food, and try massage. Long-term constipation needs to be checked out by a doctor.

Warm Regards Dr. Snehal Vidhate

Hlo,

For a 2-year-old child with constipation for >4 weeks and abdominal pain, please be careful with daily laxatives. I’ll answer clearly and safely 👇

❌ Amaltas (Cassia fistula) in toddlers - Amaltas is a strong stimulant laxative - NOT recommended daily for small children - Giving 1 stick every 4 days is already borderline strong for a 2-year-old

Daily use can cause: - Abdominal cramps - Dependence (bowel won’t work without medicine) - Electrolyte imbalance

👉 So: do NOT give amaltas daily to a 2-year-old.

✅ Safer & commonly used options for 2-year-old constipation

1️⃣ Lactulose syrup (safest & first choice) Very commonly prescribed by pediatricians. Dose: 5 ml once daily at night If stools are still hard → increase to 5 ml twice daily Takes 24–48 hours to work Safe for long-term use ✔ Softens stool ✔ No habit formation

2️⃣ Glycerin suppository (only when stool is very hard) Use occasionally, not daily Helps immediate stool passage Do not use more than 1–2 times/week

3️⃣ Ayurvedic gentle option (if you prefer Ayurveda) Draksha avaleha ½ teaspoon at night with warm water or milk Much gentler than amaltas Can be continued for few weeks

❌ Avoid Haritaki / Trivrit / Amaltas daily in toddlers

🍎 Diet & routine (VERY IMPORTANT) Even with medicines, this is essential: Water: frequent sips all day

Fruits daily: Papaya Pear Apple (without peel, grated)

Avoid: Excess banana Bakery items Cheese Fixed toilet sitting after meals (even if diaper)

🚨 When to see a pediatrician urgently Constipation >1 month with pain Blood in stool Very hard, large stools Poor appetite or weight loss

👉 Your child has chronic constipation, so lactulose + diet correction is the safest approach.

Amaltas should not be given daily to a 2 year old child Giving one stick once in four days is already on the higher side for this age and daily use can make the intestine lazy and dependent Amaltas works by pulling water into stool and forcing bowel movement so if used repeatedly in a small child it can worsen weakness abdominal pain and long term constipation

In a 2 year old with more than four weeks of constipation and abdominal pain the problem is usually weak digestion low gut movement insufficient fluids fear of passing hard stool or irregular bowel habits not lack of laxatives Daily laxative use is not the solution at this age

If stool is very hard painful and child is crying while passing stool you can use amaltas occasionally only not daily and in much smaller quantity mixed with warm water or milk and stopped once stool softens

Focus more on correcting the cause Give warm water sips through the day Add ghee daily to food Include ripe papaya stewed apple soaked raisins water if tolerated Avoid biscuits bread bakery excess milk refined foods

If constipation is acute and persistent for weeks with pain the child should be evaluated by a pediatrician to rule out fissure stool withholding or other causes

So my advice — Do not give amaltas daily to a 2 year old… Use only occasionally if absolutely needed… Correct diet fluids routine and digestion first…

Don’t give amaltas

Can you describe the pattern of passing stool before this constipation issue.

Poor intake of fluids, low fibre diet can also leads to constipation issue. Plz make sure about the diet. Some babies may suppress the urge for passing stools

Intake ripe banana, grapes, dates, raisins . Restrict more milk consumption.

Triphala ghrita 3/4 drops can be given.

Or amalakyadariahta 1/2 tsp mixed with 1 tsp water can be given once after food intake.

Or abhayarishta 1/2 tsp mixed with 1 tsp water can be given

Don’t take all medicine. Prefer one medicine and observe your baby.

Do physical activities for 1 hour daily. Slight warm hand can be placed over abdomen area. Do cyclic movements of legs.

Take care, Dr. Shaniba

Not at all safe.

Babies below 6 years of age should not be given harsh laxatives.

First start by giving FULL RIPEN BANANA or APPLE at night.

If that doesnot work, give a cup of hot milk with 2 tsp of ghee in it.

Even if that doesnot work give ISABGOL 1 tsp soaked in ½ cup water for half an hour.

If constipation continues start Syp. Kumari Asav No 3 2 tsp twice a day.

❌Completely avoid Breads Biscuits Bakery products Roti Junk and packed products Pizza pasta and other continental food.

✔️Must in the diet

Enough of milk and butter milk Ghee 3 tsp in the whole day Salads Vegetables Hydration upto 2 lts of liquid in whole diet
