Hi Waqas,

Can you tell me if you experience symptoms like irregular periods, acne, hair growth, or weight gain related to PCOS? How is your stress level and sleep quality?

In Ayurveda, PCOS can often be linked to an imbalance in Vata and Kapha doshas. Herbs like Shatavari, Ashoka, and Guduchi can help balance hormones and support the reproductive system. Triphala helps detoxify and improve digestion, which is important for managing PCOS. A Pitta and Kapha-reducing diet with regular physical activity like yoga or walking can help improve overall health.

Understanding the complexities of PCOs, or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, requires a multi-faceted approach, especially considering your recent lifestyle and medical background. At 24, post-D&C and being a mother of three, balancing your hormones is challenging yet definitely achievable with some adaptations.

Firstly, it’s good you’re mindful of diet; however, with PCOs, specific adjustments can help optimize your efforts. Focus on foods low on the glycemic index — these are less likely to spike insulin levels, which can worsen PCO symptoms. Include plenty of green leafy vegetables, whole grains like quinoa or brown rice, and lean proteins such as lentils and beans. Avoid processed sugars as much as possible; they can wreak havoc with hormonal balance.

Regular movement, around 30 minutes most days, even if it’s simply walking, can immensely benefit hormonal levels by improving insulin sensitivity. Yoga, especially poses focusing on the lower abdomen like ‘Bhujangasana’ or ‘Naukasana,’ can also be beneficial in balance of vata and kapha doshas, often implicated in PCOs.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, balancing your body’s doshas is key. Kapha reduction can be aimed at through spices like cumin, coriander, and turmeric, which can be included in your regular cooking to aid digestion and improve metabolism. Ashwagandha is an adaptogen that could assist in hormone regulation and stress management — but do consult with a local Ayurvedic practitioner before using herbs, especially given your concurrent medications.

Consistency is crucial. Medications may not seem to have immediate effects, but integrating these lifestyle changes with a continued medical approach could lead to more sustainable relief. If problems persist, further consultation with your doctor is advised to rule out complications or adjust existing treatments. Always prioritize safety, so work closely with your healthcare providers to navigate this journey effectively.
