Hi Shabana,

Can you tell me if you’ve experienced any other changes in your health, such as weight gain, stress, or changes in appetite? Have you noticed any other symptoms like mood swings, hot flashes, or night sweats, which might suggest hormonal changes? Is there any history of irregular periods in your family?

At 43, it’s possible that your menstrual cycle could be influenced by perimenopause, where hormonal fluctuations can cause delays or changes in periods. In Ayurveda, this can be linked to an imbalance in Vata and Pitta doshas. I recommend using Shatavari and Ashwagandha to balance hormones and support reproductive health. Maintaining a balanced diet with cooling foods like cucumbers and pomegranate, along with regular stress-reducing practices such as yoga or meditation, may also help in restoring your cycle.

Experiencing a delay in periods can be concerning, but at 43 years of age, it’s not uncommon for there to be some changes in your menstrual cycle. The body undergoes various transitions that might cause changes in your cycle duration and frequency. Menopause, which marks the end of your reproductive years, usually begins between the ages of 40 and 55, often starting with irregular periods.

Nevertheless, in Ayurveda, irregularities in menstrual cycles can often be attributed to an imbalance in the doshas, primarily Vata. Alongside hormonal changes, stress, lifestyle or dietary habits can also act as culprits. Here’s what you might consider to restore balance:

1. Diet and Nutrition: Ensure your diet is rich in warming foods that help balance Vata. Foods like sweet potatoes, cooked vegetables, or whole grains such as quinoa. Avoid cold or raw foods, as they can aggravate Vata.

2. Herbal Support: Consider Ayurvedic herbs like Ashwagandha or Shatavari that can help support hormonal balance and regular menstrual cycles. As always, consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before starting any new herbal treatments.

3. Lifestyle Adjusments: Maintain a regular daily routine, as Vata benefits from regularity. Try to get up and go to bed at the same time every day. Practicing calm, grounding activities like yoga or meditation may help reduce stress, which can affect menstruation.

4. Hydration: Stay well-hydrated, as proper water intake helps to maintain optimal body functioning. Aim for warm drinks as they soothe the body.

If this delay in your period continues, or if you experience any new symptoms, it might be beneficial to see a healthcare provider to rule out conditions such as thyroid imbalance— sometimes presenting without significant health symptoms—or other possible issues that can affect menstruation. Keep note of any changes in your menstrual cycle, as this will be helpful for your healthcare professional.
