Addressing convulsions - #20740

Lawrence Okaki

I have been experiencing convulsions. The EEG turned negative. I can't therefore know if am epileptic. But I experience the episodes. What are the best Ayurvedic drugs to use. Am in Kenya. I am now using Brahmin, mentat and Goodheart Ayurvedic drugs. Are they the solution?

I came to inquire so that I can know if there’s something more I need to do. A guy dealing with herbal medicine gave me the prescription of the above drugs and told me to use for 45 days. And directed me to this site to ask any other question. Should I do any other tests. One physician told me that having experienced more than 7 convulsions was enough evidence of epilepsy.

When it comes to managing conditions like convulsions, even if an EEG turns negative, it’s crucial to ensure you’re in touch with a healthcare professional to rule out any serious underlying causes. Convulsions can be quite complex; hence an integrative approach with modern medicine and Ayurveda often gives the best results.

In Ayurveda, convulsions may be understood in the context of Vata imbalance, particularly Prana Vata, which governs mental functions and nervous system activity. While you’re using Brahmi and Mentat, which are very helpful in supporting cognitive functions and calming the nervous system, Ikusually advise considering several other aspects as well.

First, maintaining a Vata-pacifying routine is essential. Incorporate warm, cooked, and nourishing foods like kichari, which supports Agni or digestive fire, helping to balance Vata. Spices like ginger, cumin, and turmeric can further aid digestion and reduce Vata imbalance. End your day with a warm glass of milk with a pinch of turmeric and nutmeg, which grounds Vata and supports restful sleep.

Abhyanga, a daily self-oil massage using warm sesame oil or medicated oils like Ashwagandha Bala Oil, can be surprisingly effective. This practice soothes the nervous system and reduces the over-excitability associated with convulsions. Additionally, try regular Shirodhara—a stream of warm oil poured gently over the forehead—which deeply calms the mind.

Taking Ashwagandha or Jatamansi supplements may provide further support. These adaptogens help enhance resilience to stress and support neurological health. But, kindly consult with a local Ayurvedic practitioner to ensure these herbs are appropriate for you.

Consider Pranayama or meditation daily, even as brief as 10 minutes. Simple breathing exercises like Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing) can enhance oxygen flow to the brain and harmonize mental function.

Ensure, though, that oughtreach out to medical professionals alongside Ayurveda—a integrated approach can offer the best safety net. Convulsions can be serious, and safety should always come first.
