can we eat curd and jaggery together - #24443

Anthony

I am really curious about this thing that's been bugging me lately. Last week, I had this delicious Indian meal and they served curd with jaggery. It was super tasty, but then I heard someone say that you shouldn’t eat curd and jaggery together? Like, what? I mean, I've always thought of them as a great combo for digestion and energy. My mom used to say it’s good for health but now I’m confused. I've been having some digestion issues lately, some bloating and a bit of acidity, and was thinking curd might help. But now I’m just wondering if eating curd and jaggery together could be making it worse. Can we eat curd and jaggery together or are they really a bad mix? I also read somewhere that curd and jaggery could counteract each other's benefits? What do you all think? Should I just stick to one of them? Hope to get some clarity, 'cause I really don’t want to mess up my gut more than it already is. Thanks!

The combination of curd and jaggery can indeed be quite delicious and, traditionally, is often consumed together in various parts of India. In terms of Ayurveda, though, the compatibility of foods is considered an essential aspect of their health benefits, often referred to as “viruddha ahara,” or incompatible food combinations. While curd (or yogurt) is generally considered to be beneficial for digestion due to its probiotic content, it can sometimes aggravate kapha dosha and increase pitta in susceptible individuals, especially when consumed excessively or improperly.

When it comes to jaggery, which is a natural sweetener derived from sugarcane or palm, it is considered a nutritious alternative to refined sugar. Jaggery on its own can be mildly heating but helps in boosting energy and providing nutrients like iron and magnesium. Together, curd and jaggery are not inherently a bad combination. However, the key is in moderation and knowing one’s own body type (prakriti) and current dosha imbalances, if any.

Given your symptoms of bloating and acidity, these could be indicators of an imbalance in pitta and even vata dosha. Curd can sometimes exacerbate these symptoms if consumed with certain foods or at improper times. For your situation, it’s best to consume curd during the day when digestive fire (agni) is strongest. If you choose to have curd with jaggery, do so in small quantities and observe how your body reacts. Also, ensure that the curd is fresh and not too sour, as sour curd is more likely to aggravate your digestion issues.

Consider incorporating room temperature water before meals to aid digestion and avoid eating very hot or heavy foods in the evening. Since individualized advice is crucial in Ayurveda, if these symptoms persist, consulting a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for a personalized assessment would be beneficial. They might recommend other dietary adjustments or herbal supports tailored to your unique needs.

Balancing your diet with foods that calm any pitta and vata disturbances — such as sweet and cooling foods, ample cooked vegetables, and appropriate spices — will likely support your digestive health better. Taking this holistic approach can help restore balance to your gut without you having to give up on enjoying your favorite flavors completely.
