how to make gulkand at home - #24902

Lucy

I am really curious about how to make gulkand at home. Lately, I’ve been feeling a bit drained and noticed that my digestion isn’t great. A friend suggested gulkand might help with that, and I've read online that it's not only good for digestion but also helps with cooling the body. Got a sweet tooth, too! 😂 I tried looking up recipes, but there’s so much info out there, and honestly, it’s all a bit overwhelming. My grandma used to make it, but I never paid much attention when I was younger, and wish I would've. I have the petals of some fresh roses, but they’re starting to wilt, and I have no clue how much sugar or what else I might need. Am I supposed to just mix them? Like, do the roses need to be dried first, or can I use fresh ones? Also, how long does it take to make gulkand at home before it's ready to eat? Does it really help with the heat and digestion issues like people say? Would love any tips or tricks you all might have. Thanks a ton! 🌹

Gulkand is indeed a delightful and beneficial Ayurvedic preparation that acts as a natural coolant and an aid for digestion. You can make it easily at home, and fresh rose petals are perfect for this. Let’s break it down into simple steps.

1. Selecting Roses: First, ensure you’re using organically grown roses free from pesticides. Fresh petals are preferable; there’s no need to dry them first.

2. Ingredients: You will need rose petals and sugar. For each cup of tightly packed rose petals, you will usually need about 3/4 cup to 1 cup of sugar.

3. Preparation Steps: - Start by gently washing the rose petals and pat them dry with a clean cloth. This is important to remove any dust or particles. - In a clean, dry jar, layer the rose petals and sugar. Place a layer of petals, followed by a layer of sugar, repeating this pattern until the jar is full. - Press slightly on each layer to ensure the sugar covers all petals completely, which helps in the preservation and fermentation process.

4. Fermentation: - Seal the jar tightly and place it in sunlight for at least 7 to 15 days. The sun helps in natural fermentation, enhancing the flavors and medicinal benefits. - Shake the jar gently every couple of days to mix contents evenly. You’ll notice the sugar dissolves gradually and merges with the petals to form a syrupy consistency.

5. Storage: Once ready, store gulkand in a cool, dry place. It doesn’t typically spoil easily and can last several months if handled properly.

As far as benefits go, Gulkand is traditionally used in Ayurveda to relieve heat-related issues, improve digestion, and for its mild laxative properties. It also helps in reducing acidity and promoting a healthy gut environment. However, remember that moderation is key, especially if managing sugar intake is a concern for you.

This sweet and fragrant remedy isn’t just pleasurable for your sweet tooth but supports overall wellness too. Enjoy a teaspoon daily, either directly or mixed into milk, to savor its full benefits.
