who should avoid beetroot - #35996

Claire

I am super confused about beetroot and who should avoid beetroot, like, is it even safe for everyone? I’ve been trying to eat more healthy, and beetroot seemed really great to me! My friend told me it's packed with nutrients, but then she dropped this bomb that some people really shouldn't eat it. I’ve got high blood pressure and, like, I thought beetroot was good for that, right?? But then I heard that for some people, it can mess with their blood pressure or cause other issues. My doctor never mentioned who should avoid beetroot, and now I’m just, like, is it something I need to worry about??? I’ve also got these weird stomach cramps sometimes after eating certain foods. I thought maybe I was just sensitive, but I keep hearing about how beets might not be for everyone, especially if your digestive system is kinda off. Do you all think that’s a thing too?? Like, who should avoid beetroot? Should I just steer clear altogether? I don’t wanna miss out on something healthy but also don't wanna freak out my stomach or make my blood pressure go nuts. Any advice would really help! Thanks in advance!

Beetroot is indeed packed with essential nutrients and antioxidants, which are beneficial for many people. It can help reduce high blood pressure due to the nitrates that aid vasodilation, and support overall cardiovascular health. However, not everyone should make beetroot a staple, especially if existing health conditions or sensitivities come into play.

Those with kidney stone tendencies should be cautious with beetroot due to its high oxalate content, which can form stones in susceptible individuals. Monitoring or limiting beetroot intake would be prudent here. If you have issues, consult your healthcare provider, and discuss ways to incorporate beetroots, if at all safely.

Another group to be mindful is those with certain digestive system concerns. Beetroots are high in FODMAPs, which can cause discomfort for those with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or similar digestive issues. Your occasional stomach cramps might be related, particularly if you notice them after beetroot consumption. It’s worth keeping a food journal to link beetroot or other foods, to your cramps, and consult an Ayurvedic practitioner who can help balance your digestive fire - the agni.

Additionally, individuals with low blood pressure should monitor their beet intake as it could contribute further to hypotensive episodes. Since you’re managing high blood pressure, beetroots theoretically align with your goals, but everybody reacts differently.

For practical advice, start with small amounts and note any physiological changes. Consider pairing beetroot with warming spices like ginger to improve digestibility, aligning with Ayurvedic principles. Also, your health care provider or an Ayurvedic expert should be a key part of the conversation, to safely incorporate beetroot into your diet considering your individual prakriti and current conditions.

Beetroot, with its vibrant color and nutrient-rich profile, is indeed a powerful vegetable. But like any food, it’s not universally suitable for everyone. Understanding your own unique body constitution—your prakriti—and current health context is key here.

For those with a kapha-dominated prakriti, beetroot may aggravate this dosha because it’s sweet and can be heavy to digest. In Ayurveda, balance is everything, so if you’re prone to kapha imbalances—characterized by issues like weight gain, lethargy, or congestion—consuming beetroot in excess may not be beneficial.

You’re right about beetroot’s potential benefits for blood pressure; it’s rich in nitrates that can help in lowering it. However, if you have a condition that affects the way your body processes nitrates, it’s wise to be cautious. Those with kidney issues, for instance, might need to avoid beetroot as it’s rich in oxalates, which could contribute to kidney stone formation.

Given your mention of stomach cramps, it’s possible beetroots are straining your digestive fire, or agni. If your digestion is notably sensitive, incorporating small quantities and observing how your body responds is prudent.

To maintain digestive health, pair beets with warming spices like cumin or coriander, and consider steaming or cooking them, as this makes them easier to digest than raw beetroot. If concerns persist, or if you experience exacerbated symptoms, consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner or your doctor would provide peace of mind and tailored advice. Balancing cautious exploration with awareness of how your body reacts is the way to go!
