why periods get delay - #36717

Gabriel

I am really worried about my health right now. Last month my periods were late, and I just thought it was stress from work or maybe it was something else. But this month, they were delayed again, like a week late! I've read about why periods get delay and it seems like there could be a million reasons, from hormonal imbalances to lifestyle changes, or could it be something more serious?? I’m not on any contraception, and I was stressed out a lot lately, but I thought stress would be a normal thing we all go through. I feel kind of all over the place, like I have cramps sometimes, and other rare times, I feel fine. I also realized my diet has been off too, eating junk food instead of my usual healthy meals... I’m not sure if that’s related? I’m in my late twenties and usually my cycles are pretty regular, so why periods get delay now? I also read that sudden weight changes can cause this too, but I haven’t lost or gained significant weight recently. Should I see a doctor or could Ayurveda help me with this?? Like, are there specific herbs or treatments that could balance my hormones or do something to help regularize my cycles? Really feeling confused and just not sure what to do... Any advice would mean a lot! Thanks!

Delays in menstrual cycles can indeed occur due to various factors, and in your situation, it seems to a combination of stress, dietary changes, and potentially other lifestyle shifts. Stress has a significant impact on your body’s hormone regulation processes. When stressed, your body produces more cortisol, which can interfere with the signals that regulate your menstrual cycle, potentially causing delays.

The fact that you’ve been consuming more junk food lately can also contribute to this delay. Poor diet can affect your Agni (digestive fire), leading to imbalance in the doshas, especially Vata and Pitta. An upset Agni can cause improper digestion and assimilation of nutrients, which affects the production and regulation of hormones necessary for a regular menstrual cycle.

For managing stress, try to incorporate Pranayama or deep-breathing exercises into your daily routine. Practicing yoga asanas, especially those that focus on balancing the Vata dosha, might also be beneficial. Poses like Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle Pose) and Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose) can be calming and supportive for regular cycles.

In regard to diet, aim to consume warm, freshly-prepared meals that are easy to digest. Include spices such as cumin, coriander, and fennel to aid digestion and balance Vata and Pitta. Herbs like Ashwagandha and Shatavari have been traditionally used in Ayurveda to support hormonal balance and strengthen reproductive health.

If your menstrual irregularities continue or are accompanied by severe pain or discomfort, it would indeed be prudent to consult with a healthcare professional or an Ayurvedic practitioner to explore underlying causes further. They can provide a more personalized assessment based on your unique Prakriti (constitution) and any possible imbalances.

The delay in your menstrual cycle can indeed be traced to a variety of factors, some of which you’ve already mentioned—like stress and dietary changes. In the context of Siddha-Ayurveda, we would consider imbalances in your doshas, especially vata. Vata dosha, when aggravated, can lead to irregular cycles, delay, or even skipped periods, due to its characteristic of movement and instability.

First, let’s address the dietary shifts. A diet lacking in nourishment can disrupt your agni, or digestive fire, which affects the balance of rasa dhatu (the tissue responsible for nourishment) and ultimately your reproductive system. Try to focus on consuming fresh, whole foods, which favor vata pacification—think warm, cooked meals with spices like ginger, cumin, and cinnamon, which are known to stabilize your digestive system and support hormonal balance.

Stress, being a significant factor, can also unbalance vata, leading to delayed cycles. Incorporating grounding activities like yoga and deep breathing exercises can be helpful. Spend at least 20-30 minutes daily for pranayama, focusing on slow, deep breaths to calm the mind.

If you are considering herbal remedies, Ashoka (Saraca indica) and Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) are traditionally recommended to support reproductive health and hormonal balance. Ashoka can help mitigate excessive pain or cramps, while Shatavari nourishes the reproductive tissues and balances female hormones. However, it’s crucial to consult with a qualified practitioner to ensure these herbs are right for you, especially if there might be any underlying issues that require specific attention.

If the problem persists or if you experience any severe symptoms like excessive bleeding, it’s important to consult a medical professional to rule out any serious conditions. Ayurveda can be a valuable complement to conventional medicine, but timely medical advice should be prioritized if things don’t seem right. Such delays, though occasionally common, should not be ignored if they become a pattern, to ensure there isn’t a more serious underlying health issue.
