shilajit or ashwagandha which is better - #36770
I am really confused about something. Lately, I've been reading a ton about both shilajit and ashwagandha. I mean, like everyone talks about how good they are for health, but I'm stuck trying to decide shilajit or ashwagandha which is better for me? Here's the deal: I've been feeling super run down, some kind of exhaustion that just won't go away, and I know I've gotta boost my energy and stamina. A friend suggested shilajit, saying it's great for energy and also supports overall health, but then I hear people raving about ashwagandha helping with stress and anxiety which is something I deal with almost daily. I tried ashwagandha a few months ago, I thought I was feeling a bit more calm at first, but then I didn't stick with it too long cause of some upset stomach issues… I guess I’m just wondering, shilajit or ashwagandha which is better for someone like me? Should I just give ashwagandha another try? Or is it better to jump into shilajit as a more powerful option? I'm worried about side effects and really want to make the right choice. And what about combining them? Is it even a good idea? Sorry for the jumble, but I really need some clarity here!

Both shilajit and ashwagandha have their own unique benefits and can address different needs. From an Ayurvedic perspective, evaluating your individual constitution or dosha imbalance is crucial to making the right choice. Since you mentioned experiencing exhaustion and dealing with stress and anxiety, let’s consider both.
Shilajit is renowned for it’s rejuvenating and adaptogenic properties, known to bolster energy, stamina, and vitality. It’s understood in Ayurveda as a “Rasayana,” offering deep nourishment and rejuvenation to all tissues. Shilajit can help enhance your vitality and may particularly support you if you have a Vata or Kapha imbalance, which is often associated with fatigue and low energy.
On the other hand, Ashwagandha is also a powerful “Rasayana” but is more prominently used for its stress-reducing and calming effects. It’s exceptional for alleviating stress and anxiety, which aligns with some of your concerns. Moreover, ashwagandha helps in restoring physical and mental balance, especially beneficial for Vata and Kapha types.
Given your past experience with an upset stomach on Ashwagandha, it’s worth considering if you consumed it on an empty stomach, which can sometimes cause digestive issues. If you wish to to reintroduce it, it might be best to take it after meals with warm milk or water to ease digestion.
Regarding combining them, while there are no inherent contraindications in Ayurveda in taking both together, it’s generally advisable to start with one to monitor how your body responds. You might choose to begin might shilajit, given your immediate concern about energy boosting. After assessing this foundation, you can gradually incorporate Ashwagandha.
Note, shilajit should be consumed in the purest form available, usually starting with a small dose of around 300 to 500 mg per day. It should be taken mixed in warm water or milk to enhance its absorption. As always, maintaining a balanced diet and following a daily routine that supports circadian rhythms will enhance any adaptogenic supplement intake. Consult a healthcare professional, particularly if you have specific health conditions or are on medications, to avoid any unwarranted reactions.
