Certainly, there are a variety of reasons why your menstrual cycle might be delayed. In the Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition, we often attribute such imbalances to disturbances in your doshas, particularly vata dosha, which governs movement and flow within the body, including the menstrual cycle. Stress, as you mentioned, is very much capable of exacerbating vata imbalance. This can disrupt your cycle because heightened vata can lead to irregularity in all bodily rhythms.
Your new diet could also be contributing. Reduction in carbs and sugars, if not balanced carefully, might affect agni, or your digestive fire. If agni is impaired, it can lead to weakness in the rasa dhatu (plasma), which directly affects the menstrual blood’s nourishment. This can lead to either delayed or missed periods.
Cramping could indeed be a sign that your cycle is trying to resume, potentially influenced by a combination of lifestyle changes. It might be helpful to make subtle adjustments to regain balance. Gradually reintroduce some complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains, to support your energy levels and vata dosha. Make sure you stay hydrated—warm herbal teas like ginger or cinnamon can be beneficial, as both support agni and help alleviate cramping.
Exercise, when moderate, is generally supportive for regularity. However, excessive exercise can strain your system and further stress vata. So should aim for balance.
If your period remains delayed beyond a few weeks or if you experience any other concerning symptoms, consulting a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation would be wise. There could be an underlying health issue that requires attention. For recurring or severe disruptions, allied support from a trained Siddha-Ayurvedic practitioner could also provide specially customized insights and remedies.
