To address diabetes in Ayurveda, it’s essential to consider not just blood sugar levels, but the underlying imbalance in your doshas, particularly Kapha and Pitta. With fasting blood sugar higher than postprandial, we need to focus on digestion and metabolic processes. Your existing carbohydrate restriction and yoga are beneficial, but we can add more tailored Ayurvedic strategies.
1. Dietary Adjustments: Increase intake of bitter and astringent foods, as they help balance Kapha. Include leafy greens, bitter gourd, fenugreek seeds, and turmeric. Avoid foods that are heavy or oily as they can exacerbate Kapha. Steamed vegetables, whole grains like quinoa or barley may be favorable, and small frequent meals help maintain energy levels.
2. Herbal Remedies: Research has shown fenugreek seeds, guclo, and cinnamon may support blood sugar control. Fenugreek can be taken as a powder mixed with water before meals. Guduchi, known as Tinospora cordifolia, aids in boosting metabolism and can be taken as a decoction or tablets.
3. Daily Routines and Practices (Dinacharya): Stick to grounded routines, eat meals at consistent times. Continue yoga but integrate Pranayama (breathing exercises) such as Kapalbhati and Anulom Vilom which support metabolic processes. Regular meditation can help reduce stress, a known factor in blood sugar regulation.
4. Digestive Health: Maintaining a strong Agni (digestive fire) is crucial. You could try using trikatu (a blend of ginger, long pepper, and black pepper) before meals to stimulate digestion and improve metabolic function.
5. Lifestyle Considerations: Ensure adequate sleep and rest; avoid daytime naps which can increase Kapha. Consider working with an Ayurvedic practitioner to explore Panchakarma, a detoxification and rejuvenation therapy, which aims to remove deep-seated toxins and restore doshic balance.
6. Monitoring and Adjustment: While Ayurveda can offer significant support, continue monitoring your blood sugar levels, and adjust accordingly with your healthcare provider. The goal is a gradual shift towards balance, and any major changes should involve regular consultations.
It’s crucial to continue collaborating with your healthcare professionals, ensuring any Ayurvedic treatments complement your current regimen. Adjustments might be needed over time.
