Constipation during pregnancy is quite common due to hormonal changes that relax the intestinal muscles, slowing down digestion. The focus here is to balance the Vata dosha which tends to lead to dryness and immobility, causing constipation. Increasing hydration and dietary fiber is indeed beneficial, and missed hydration can slow fiber’s effectiveness, so do try to keep a small water bottle with you to sip throughout the day.
To alleviate constipation using Siddha-Ayurvedic principles, first consider consuming warm, cooked foods which are easier to digest. Also, introducing ghee in moderation can soothe the intestinal tract and help with regular bowel movements. A teaspoon of ghee mixed into warm milk before bedtime is traditionally used as a gentle laxative.
In terms of foods to avoid, try limiting intake of dry, cold, or processed items as they can aggravate Vata. Spices like turmeric and ajwain (carom seeds) can be included, as they aid digestion. A small pinch of turmeric or cumin with meals could support digestive fire, or agni, without being excessive.
For herbal teas, senna is not advised during pregnancy; instead, ginger tea might be helpful. Ginger can stimulate digestion and can be taken safely in moderate amounts during pregnancy.
Practices like regular light physical activity, such as walking or prenatal yoga, support gentle stimulation of the gastrointestinal tract. Remember, any persistent difficulty with bowel movements, bloating, or severe discomfort should be discussed with your healthcare provider to rule out any other concerns and ensure both your and the baby’s health.
