what happens if we eat curd during periods - #40706

Grace

I am really confused about whether I should be eating curd during my periods. Last month I had the worst cramps and bloating, and my friend suggested I should avoid curd completely. But then I read somewhere that curd could be good for digestion? 🤔 My mom always used to say, "curd helps with everything," but I don't know if that applies when I'm on my period. I mean, I tend to feel super nauseous and bloated, and I was really craving some yogurt with fruit, but now I’m not sure what to do. Half the time I feel like I’m just trying to navigate through this mess of dos and don’ts. What happens if we eat curd during periods anyway? Like, would it make cramps worse or is it just a myth? Are there any benefits or risks around eating curd during periods? I've tried googling but all I get are conflicting answers! Some people swear by it, while other say it can lead to heavier flow or something like that. I just wanna get through this month without the extra pain, you know? Should I just stick to other foods or is it safe to include it? 🤷‍♀️ I guess any tips on managing cramps better would also help!

In Ayurveda, periods are linked to the ‘Apana Vata,’ the downward flow of energy that is responsible for elimination in your body. During menstruation, this energy needs to flow smoothly to prevent cramps and bloating. So, the foods you consume play a significant role in maintaining or disrupting this balance. Curd, with its potential to exacerbate Vata and Kapha doshas, might not be the best choice during this time for some individuals. The cold and heavy properties of curd could potentially lead to increased bloating, gas, or even more cramps for you.

Yet, curd is also known for its probiotics which support digestion. It creates a bit of a paradox—it can be beneficial and be problematic based on individual constitution. If your digestive fire (Agni) is very strong, curd in moderation might actually help you digest foods better. But, if agni is low during periods, curd can create ama (toxins) leading to bloating and discomfort.

In Ayurveda, understanding your Prakriti and Dosha balance is crucial. If you’re experiencing nausea and bloating, it might be advisable to skip curd during your periods . Instead, opt for lighter and warm foods that pacify Vata like cooked veggies, rice, and soups. Consider trying a warm herbal tea with ginger and fennel to support digestion and reduce cramps.

For managing cramps, practical tips include following a routine with warm oil massages—using sesame oil—to keep Vata balanced. Gentle yoga and pranayama can also help ease the discomfort. Stay well hydrated. Avoid cold and heavy meals during this time.

If you’re truly craving curd, have it at room temperature and consider adding a pinch of black pepper or cumin to enhance digestion. However, listen to your body’s signals and make adjustments. If you ever experience significant changes or intense symptoms, seeking medical advice is always a good step.

Eating curd during your periods is not harmful for most people, but it depends on your unique prakriti (body constitution) and your current state of dosha balance. In Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, curd is known to have sour and heavy qualities, which can aggravate kapha dosha and potentially increase ama (toxins) if your agni (digestive fire) is weak. This can sometimes lead to bloating or make it worse if you’re prone to it during periods.

For vata-predominant individuals, whose symptoms often include bloating and cramps during menstruation, it’s essential to ensure that agni is strong. Adding spices like cumin or ginger to your diet can assist with this. Ginger tea can also help in soothing cramps and enhancing digestion. During menstruation, when vata is naturally higher due to elimination processes, grounding and warm foods are typically supportive.

If you’re experiencing nausea and bloating specifically, consider the timing and amount of curd you’re consuming. It’s best to eat curd during the day, as it can be heavier to digest in the evening. Combining curd with digestive spices, or having it in the form of buttermilk with a pinch of salt and ginger, may be easier on the stomach. This reduces the risk of aggravating kapha and aids in digestion.

If you notice that curd consistently worsens symptoms like cramps or bloating, it may be worth limiting it during your menstrual phase. Instead, focus on warm, nourishing soups and avoiding excessively cold or sour foods, which may contribute to discomfort. Integrating exercises like gentle yoga or pranayama can also facilitate energy flow and alleviate menstrual discomfort.

In case symptoms are severe or discomfort is unusually high, do seek medical advice to explore other potential underlying causes.
