Hing, or asafoetida, is indeed known in Ayurveda for its digestive benefits, and it’s particularly effective in relieving gas and bloating. In terms of how hing works, it primarily helps by reducing vata dosha, which is often the root cause of bloating and gas. It enhances the digestive fire, or agni, which can be quite helpful for easing discomfort in a baby’s tummy.
However, given that you’re considering using it for a baby, caution is essential. Babies are quite sensitive, and while hing can be beneficial, you should avoid directly ingesting it by mouth at such an early age due to its strong potency. For infants, it’s more appropriate to use hing externally. Here’s what you can do:
Take a very small pinch of hing and dissolve it in a few drops of warm water to form a thin paste. Rub this paste gently around the baby’s navel, not directly on it. This method should be sufficient to help relieve their discomfort without the risk of ingesting. Applying the paste twice a day, especially before the baby sleeps, might yield better results in easing the gas and colic.
Another thing to consider is your baby’s diet (and the mother’s diet if breastfeeding). Ensure that foods known to cause gas, like specific legumes or very fibrous vegetables, are minimized. Massaging the baby’s belly in a clockwise direction can sometime also support their digestion process.
