What Should I Wear During an Ayurvedic Massage? - #13826

Caleb

I recently booked my first Ayurvedic massage, and now I’m stressing over what to wear. I’ve had regular spa massages before, where they just give you a towel or disposable underwear, but I feel like Ayurvedic massage might be different? I read that it involves a lot of oil and specific movements, so now I’m wondering—do I need to wear something special for it? Some people say you should be completely undressed, others say wear a loose cotton garment, and some mention they provide a cloth or dhoti. I really don’t want to feel awkward or uncomfortable during my first Ayurvedic massage, but at the same time, I want to make sure I’m following the right traditions. Another thing—since there’s so much oil used in Ayurvedic massage, does it completely soak into the skin, or will I end up covered in it afterward? Do I need to bring a change of clothes, or will the place provide something? Also, how long should I wait before showering after an Ayurvedic massage? Some sources say you shouldn’t wash off the oil right away because it needs time to absorb. Would love to hear from anyone who’s had an Ayurvedic massage before! What did you wear? What should I bring with me? And is there anything else I should know before going for my first session?

For your first Ayurvedic massage, here’s what to expect: 1. What to Wear: Most Ayurvedic centers provide a disposable garment or cotton cloth/dhoti for modesty and comfort. You typically don’t wear regular clothes, as the massage uses a significant amount of oil. Some therapies might require complete undressing, but you’ll be draped appropriately. 2. Oil Absorption: Ayurvedic massages use herbal oils that may not fully absorb during the session. You’ll likely feel oily afterward. It’s a good idea to bring a change of clothes that you don’t mind getting stained. 3. Showering After: Wait 1-2 hours before showering. This allows the oils to penetrate and nourish your skin fully. Some centers may advise waiting even longer for optimal benefits. Tips for Comfort: Bring a towel or ask the center if they provide one. Communicate your comfort level to the therapist if you have any concerns. Relax and enjoy—it’s all about healing and balancing your body!

Oh, I get your confusion, there's quite a few things to consider, right? Ayurvedic massage, or Abhyanga as it’s called, is indeed a bit different than the typical spa massage. When it comes to attire, most traditional Ayurvedic massage centers will provide you with something, usually a cloth or a dhoti, to wear during the massage. You aren't expected to bring your own clothing, so don't stress too much about that. The emphasis in Ayurveda is on ensuring you feel relaxed and comfortable, so nudity isn’t a requirement if you’re not comfortable with it—just communicate your preferences with your therapist in advance! About the oil, well, yes! Abhyanga involves a lot of warm oil and it’s a central part of the therapy. They really slather it on because the oils are packed with herbs and are meant to nourish your skin, soothe your doshas, and improve your health over time. Post-massage, expect to have a good amount of oil on your skin, so bringing a change of clothes is a smart move. Something loose and old maybe, as oils can stain. As for showering, traditional Ayurvedic practice suggests waiting a bit before washing off the oil. The idea is to let the oils further absorb and provide their benefits. I'd say somewhere around 2-3 hours would be ideal. This can help with cooling and allows the herbs to get in deeper. Don’t forget, though—communicating with the massage center is key. You can ask them directly about what they provide and what you might need to bring. Each place might handle things a bit differently depending on how traditional they are or if they have their own specific protocols. Enjoy the session! It’s all about relaxing, tuning in with your body and soaking up some ancient wellness wisdom. Just remember to take it easy, and stay hydrated after your massage. Let me know how it goes!
