is shilajit good for liver - #24843
I am really curious about something… For the past few months, I've been feeling pretty run down, and my digestion is just all over the place. I went to the doctor, did some tests and found out my liver enzymes are a bit elevated. I came across this thing called shilajit and heard it's supposed to be good for the liver? But like, is shilajit good for liver health? It seems to be buzzing in the health community, but I want to know if there’s real science behind it or just hype. I’ve tried various things, some work, some don't. While researching, I stumbled upon testimonials of people saying shilajit really helped them. I wonder if it’s safe to try that on its own or if I should combine it with something else?? Plus, I've read mixed opinions online. My mom is all about traditional remedies, and she says shilajit can detoxify the liver. But is shilajit really good for liver support or should I steer clear of it? Any tips or guidance would be amazing!!!

Doctors’ responses
Shilajit does have a place in Ayurveda, especially known for its rejuvenative properties. It’s often mentioned in classical texts like Charaka Samhita as a rasayana, a substance that promotes rejuvenation and longevity. Shilajit is believed to have a balancing effect on all doshas, which generally supports overall vitality, including liver health, by aiding in detoxification, improving stamina and enhancing nutrient absorption.
However, scientific evidence specific to shilajit’s direct effects on liver health isn’t vast. Some studies suggest it may help reduce damage due to its antioxidant properties, potentially benefiting liver function indirectly. Yet, these studies are limited and shouldn’t be solely relied upon for treating elevated liver enzymes or other serious liver issues.
If considering shilajit, ensure it’s of genuine quality. Purified and tested versions from reliable sources are essential due to the risk of contamination with heavy metals in some products. Begin with a small dose, traditionally around 300-500 mg per day, preferably in warm water or milk, and monitor how your body responds. Combining shilajit with other herbs like Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) might enhance its effects, but it’s best to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for a personalized approach.
Lifestyle and dietary adjustments are critical. Limit alcohol and processed foods, emphasizing whole foods rich in antioxidants like berries, leafy greens, and turmeric, which can naturally aid liver function. Hydration plays a crucial role, so ensure you drink ample fluids throughout the day.
Consult with both your healthcare provider and a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner to ensure safety, particularly because elevated liver enzymes can indicate more serious conditions needing immediate attention. Balancing modern diagnostics with traditional wisdom might provide the most comprehensive care.
