Hi! I’m an assistant to the Ask Ayurveda doctors. I’ve carefully reviewed your question.
I will explain your symptoms through the Ayurvedic perspective so you understand what is happening in your body as a whole.
The sleep disturbances you’re experiencing after discontinuing Sarpagandha may relate to an imbalance in the Vata dosha. Sarpagandha, known for its grounding and calming effects, helps to pacify Vata, which is responsible for movement and activity in the body, including the nervous system. When Vata is disturbed, it can lead to difficulty falling asleep, as well as restlessness and a racing mind at night.
Your moderate energy levels during the day and some fatigue suggest that your body’s natural rhythm or circadian cycle might be disrupted, possibly due to Vata imbalance. This can also be influenced by stress, which tends to aggravate Vata further. While your routine of regular exercise and a balanced diet is beneficial, the lingering effects of Vata disturbance may still be present, affecting your sleep quality.
Ayurveda views these symptoms as interconnected, not isolated issues. The Vata imbalance can affect your overall energy and stress levels, which in turn impacts your sleep. Addressing this requires a holistic approach to restore balance.
To give doctors a precise and effective treatment plan, your answers to the questions below are essential. Without this information, the recommendations will be more general and less accurate.
Please answer each question as clearly as possible.
1. Do you experience any specific sensations or thoughts that keep you awake at night, such as restlessness or a racing mind? 2. Have you noticed any changes in your digestion, such as bloating, irregular bowel movements, or changes in appetite, especially after stopping Sarpagandha? 3. Does your sleep quality vary with changes in weather, such as during windy or dry conditions? 4. Can you describe your evening routine, especially the hours leading up to bedtime? Do you engage in any activities that might stimulate Vata, like watching screens or intense conversations? 5. Have you observed any changes in your body’s temperature regulation, such as feeling too hot or too cold at night? 6. Are there any specific foods or drinks you consume in the evening that might be influencing your sleep, such as caffeine or heavy meals? 7. Have you tried any relaxation techniques or herbal remedies to support sleep, and if so, what has been your experience with them?
Your detailed responses will help in tailoring an Ayurvedic approach to support your sleep and overall well-being.
Sleep disturbance after stopping Sarpagandha can happen because it was helping to calm your nervous system. After stopping it, the body takes time to adjust. What you can do: Drink warm milk at night with a pinch of nutmeg Do 10–15 minutes of deep breathing or meditation before sleep Light head massage with coconut or sesame oil at night Fix a regular sleep time daily Avoid mobile/screens 1 hour before bed Avoid daytime sleep Avoid tea/coffee after evening Take light dinner before 8 PM Include 1 tsp ghee in daily diet Ayurvedic support (if needed): Ashwagandha (low dose at night) Brahmi or Jatamansi for calming mind Continue your BP medicines as advised. Do not stop them. This usually improves gradually in a few weeks with routine and calming practices. For personalised guidance and proper medicine selection, you can consult me.
