How to treat ongoing ear pressure and pain behind the ears - #20202

Yogita Reddy

Good day, please could you help me treat ongoing build up of pressure in the ear and behind the ear. I seem to have more pain when lying down in either one or both ears. It clears up sometimes but has recurred after long distance travel by car. Thank you

Hello Yogita,

Based on your condition, it appears that your Eustachian tubes are not functioning properly due to recurrent infections. To help manage this, I recommend the following:

1. Chitrak Haritaki – ½ teaspoon with lukewarm water
2. Syrup Saptilin – 2 teaspoons with lukewarm water
3. Brahmi Vati – 1 tablet twice daily
4. Shadbindu Tail – 2 drops in each nostril, twice daily

Additional Recommendations:
- Use cotton balls in your ears for protection.
- Perform the Valsalva maneuver to help clear your Eustachian tubes.
- Avoid sweets, cold beverages, and packaged foods.

Following these guidelines should help improve your condition. Let me know if you need further assistance.

Dealing with continuous ear pressure and pain can be quite discomforting, especially when it shows up after travel. According to Ayurveda, these symptoms may be linked to an imbalance in the Vata dosha, which can be aggravated by travel, particularly when it involves swift changes in altitude or prolonged sitting.

First and foremost, ensure there’s no medical emergency; if you notice severe pain, fever, or discharge from the ears, get conventional medical attention right away.

For an Ayurvedic approach, start by integrating warm, soothing, and calming practices into your routine. Try doing a gentle Abhyanga - a self-oil massage - using warm sesame oil, paying special attention to your neck, shoulders, and behind the ears. This can help in reducing Vata imbalances and thereby alleviate some of the pressure sensation.

Nasya therapy can be quite beneficial as well. Administering two to three drops of Anu taila or plain sesame oil in each nostril in the morning may help in relieving congestion and balance Vata and Kapha doshas. Do make sure to try this technique after consulting with a practitioner, especially if you’ve never tried it before.

Diet also plays a role. Opt for warm, cooked, slightly oily foods and avoid raw, cold, or dry items that might aggravate Vata. Including spices like ginger, turmeric, and coriander can support Agni, the digestive fire, small systemic imbalances.

Herbs such as Tulsi (Holy Basil) and Licorice can be taken as infusions, as they have properties which can alleviate inflammation and congestion—again, verify with a practitioner for personalized dosage and compatibility with your constitution.

Stress management is crucial too. Explore breathing exercises or gentle yoga, focusing on postures that open up the chest and shoulder area, aiding circulation and stress relief,

Remember, slow down on travel if possible, and keep your ears warm during cool weather. But, if you notice recurrence after any situation involving pressure changes, check with a healthcare provider to rule out any structural issues or infections.
