Lemon juice can have both beneficial and adverse effects on your hair, depending on how it’s used and your current hair and scalp condition. Its acidity can be clarifying, helping to remove excess oils and dandruff, which is why some people use it to manage oily hair or scalp conditions. However, lemon juice can also be irritating, especially if you have sensitive skin or if the juice is left on for too long.
From a Siddha-Ayurveda perspective, your hair fall could be due to an imbalance in your doshas—vata, pitta, and kapha—or an underlying issue with your sapta dhatus (tissue systems). Lemon juice is inherently heating, which can aggravate pitta dosha, potentially explaining the itching you experienced. When mixed with coconut oil, known for its cooling properties, it might balance out for some people, but not everyone responds the same way.
If you’re seeking to strengthen hair, consider focusing on a holistic regimen. First, ensure your diet is nourishing and balanced, supporting all the dhatus, especially meda (fat tissue) and asthi (bone tissue, related to hair health). Include foods high in good fats, such as ghee, nuts, and seeds, which can nourish the scalp and hair roots.
Externally, you might switch to gentler ingredients like aloe vera or bhringraj oil, which are cooler and help balance pitta without causing irritation. Applying a warmed mix of bhringraj oil and coconut oil weekly, leaving it on for a few hours before washing, could offer better results without the irritation.
Lastly, consider stress management and lifestyle adjustments, as anxiety or lack of proper rest can aggravate vata dosha, contributing to hair fall. If your condition worsens or persists, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying health issues.
