does curd remove dandruff - #36908

Emma

I am really at my wits end with this dandruff situation! I've tried so many over-the-counter products, shampoos, and even some home remedies from my grandma, but like it just keeps coming back, ugh! My scalp feels super itchy and sometimes I've got those embarrassing flakes showing up on my clothes. A couple of my friends mentioned I should look into using curd, but like I don’t really know how that works. Does curd remove dandruff? I heard it has some good bacteria that might help soothe the scalp or something like that? Also, what’s the best way to use it? Just apply it raw or mix it with other stuff? Last night, I decided to give it a go and applied some directly on my hair – but I just felt like a mess afterward, there was curd everywhere, literally! Was it even worth it? I don't know if I should commit to this or keep looking for different solutions. If you guys could share any tips or experiences on this whole does curd remove dandruff thing, that’d be awesome! Am I missing something here, should I do something different? Thanks in advance!

Curd can indeed help with dandruff, but it usually takes more than a single application to see noticeable results. Curd is known for its cooling and soothing properties, which can help alleviate the itchiness associated with dandruff. Its natural acidity helps maintain the scalp’s pH balance and reduces fungal growth, while its probiotic content might aid in enhancing scalp health.

However, it’s important to use curd in a manner that is most effective, rather than just applying it randomly. Here’s a method you can try: Mix half a cup of fresh curd with a tablespoon of lemon juice. Lemon has antifungal properties and helps in cleansing the scalp. Apply this mixture on your scalp thoroughly; you can use a hairbrush or your fingers to make sure it’s evenly distributed. Leave this on for about 30 to 45 minutes before washing it off with a mild herbal shampoo. Use lukewarm water, not hot as it can irritate the scalp. Do this process two to three times a week for a couple of weeks, and you should start seeing an improvement.

If you’re experiencing excessive dandruff or inflammation, it may be related to a Pitta or Kapha imbalance according to Ayurveda. Ensuring you’re following a diet that pacifies these doshas might be helpful. Incorporate cooling foods, such as cucumber, melons, and leafy greens, and avoid oily and spicy foods until your scalp health improves.

Remember to massage your scalp regularly to improve blood circulation, and make sure you are not using hot water while washing your hair as it can dry out the scalp, worsening dandruff. Also, avoid harsh shampoos, and go for more natural, herbal solutions.

Do bear in mind that if your dandruff doesn’t improve or worsens, you should consult with a qualified healthcare provider. There might be an underlying condition requiring medical attention beyond what home remedies can provide.

Curd, or yogurt, can indeed be beneficial for addressing dandruff due to its cooling properties and the presence of probiotics that could help restore scalp health. Though it might not provide an overnight solution, it can gradually reduce dandruff and soothe an itchy scalp when used correctly.

In Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition, we often consider dandruff as a result of an imbalance in the kapha and pitta doshas, which leads to dryness and itchiness. Curd’s cooling nature can help balance pitta, while its moisture can counteract dry scalp caused by an aggravated kapha.

To make the most of curd’s benefits, I suggest mixing it with other ingredients known for their scalp-healing properties. You might try creating a paste with equal parts curd, lemon juice, and a teaspoon of fenugreek powder. Lemon has acidic properties that can help remove excessive oil and flakes, and fenugreek acts as an antifungal agent.

Before applying, ensure your hair and scalp are dry. Apply the paste directly onto your scalp, massage gently, and allow it to sit for 30 minutes before rinsing with a mild shampoo. It’s important to apply this treatment 2–3 times a week for best results. Consistency is key. Make sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid residue, and be patient, as natural remedies often require time to work.

If symptoms persist, or if dandruff is severe with signs like excessive scaliness or redness, you should definitely consult a dermatologist. These could be signs of a more serious condition like seborrheic dermatitis, which might need medical intervention.
