what causes hairfall - #37022

Elijah

I am really worried about my hairfall situation! The past few months have been super stressful, and I’ve noticed that every time I wash my hair, more strands are gone than I remember. I mean, I brush my hair, and it just feels like I’m pulling out clumps sometimes. I don’t know if it’s genetics or something else, but I need to know what causes hairfall because I feel like I’m losing my mind over this! I tried some over-the-counter shampoos and oils that claim to help with hair reconstruction or whatever, but no luck – the issues still persist. I’ve even cut back on styling tools. My diet isn’t the best right now either, lots of takeout... I get that bad nutrition probably doesn’t help. I wonder, what causes hairfall really? Is it just stress and bad diet, or could it be hormone-related, or even something I’ve done without realizing like washing it too much? Plus, I’ve heard some people say it could be a thyroid thing which scares me. If anyone could give me insight into what causes hairfall or maybe share some remedies or lifestyle changes that helped them, I’d be so appreciative!

Hairfall can be a distressing concern, and it’s often driven by multiple factors. From an Ayurvedic perspective, hairfall is frequently linked to imbalances in the doshas, particularly vata and pitta. These doshas, when aggravated, can influence both the internal and external environment of your body, affecting hair health.

Stress is a major contributor as it tends to increase vata dosha, leading to dryness and brittleness in hair. Incorporating stress management techniques like meditation or yoga could be beneficial. Poor diet also plays a significant role by disrupting the balance of agni, or digestive fire, leading to the improper assimilation of nutrients needed for healthy hair.

Your mention of increased takeout food possibly high in pitta-aggravating spices and lacking in essential nutrients might contribute to this issue. Incorporating more sattvic foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds can nurture your hair. Additionally, regular meal times can stabilize your metabolism and hormone secretion.

Hormonal imbalances, thyroid disorders, and excessive use of styling products, or even harsh shampoos can further contribute to hairfall. The thyroid gland, influencing metabolism and energy regulation, can indeed be a factor if it’s under or over active, and is best assessed with a healthcare provider.

In terms of remedies, consider gentle scalp massages using oils like bhringraj or coconut to strengthen roots and improve circulation. This helps to pacify aggravated doshas locally. Limit hair washes to twice a week and use natural cleansers instead of harsh shampoos.

If the diet and lifestyle changes don’t lead to improvement, it’s wise to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner or doctor for a personalized diagnosis and treatment plan. Specific herbs and formulations may be recommended based on your unique constitution. Engaging a healthcare professional should not be delayed as it will ensure a comprehensive approach, including checking for conditions like thyroid disorders.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
