how to get rid of strep throat - #38141

Levi

I am really struggling with this awful strep throat and just don’t know what to do anymore. Last week, I started feeling this intense sore throat out of nowhere, and it just got worse. The pain was like swallowing glass. Went to the doctor yesterday, and they confirmed it’s strep throat with a test. I’m on antibiotics now, but honestly, I’m curious about how to get rid of strep throat faster, like any tips or natural remedies, you know? I’ve been drinking warm teas, but they only provide relief for a bit. My throat feels itchy too, and my tonsils are swollen big time! Eating anything is a nightmare—don’t even get me started on how much I miss my favorite spicy food. If anyone has dealt with this before, what did you do to *really* help with strep throat? I heard some folks swear by honey and lemon, or maybe gargling saltwater? Just wondering if there are any Ayurvedic suggestions or practices that can help me speed this up because, ugh, I can't keep living on soup alone! Any advice would be super appreciated!!

Strep throat can indeed be troubling, but there are ayurvedic methods that may offer comfort alongside the antibiotics you’re already takin. A combination of dietary changes, herbal remedies, and lifestyle adjustments can help manage symptoms.

Firstly, focus on maintaining Agni (digestive fire). Warm herbal teas can continue to provide relief, but consider adding ginger and turmeric. Simmer fresh ginger and a pinch of turmeric in hot water for several minutes, strain it, and sip throughout the day. This not only soothes the throat but also reduces inflammation.

Kavala or Gandusha practices (oil pulling) can be beneficial here, especially using sesame oil. Swish about a tablespoon of warm sesame oil in your mouth for 15-20 minutes, once daily. This is said to cleanse the mouth and throat, promoting healing.

You mentioned honey and lemon, and these indeed work well in Ayurveda. Mix a teaspoon of raw honey with a few drops of lemon juice, and take it twice daily. Honey also serves as an antimicrobial agent which can assist in soothing your itchy throat.

For diet, avoid overly spicy, cold, or dry foods which can aggravate your condition. Opt for khichdi—it’s warm, nourishing, and gentle on the throat. Cook with a hint of ghee, cumin, and black pepper to further enhance its digestibility while minimizing irritation.

Rest is crucial. A weakened body is less effective at fighting off infection, so prioritize rest and ensure you’re getting ample sleep. Yoga or pranayama exercises like Anulom Vilom can balance the body’s energies, reduce stress, and improve immunity.

Gargling with warm salt water remains effective too—mix 1/4 teaspoon of rock salt in a cup of warm water, gargle several times a day. This eases swelling and can clear bacteria from your throat.

Lastly, monitor your symptoms closely. If there’s no improvement or new symptoms arise, seek immediate medical advice. Balancing modern medicine and Ayurveda can be a powerful approach to wellness.

It can be quite challenging dealing with strep throat, especially when it feels like you’re only getting temporary relief. In Siddha-Ayurveda, we focus on balancing the doshas and boosting immunity, to tackle imbalances that cause infections like this. Since your throat is inflamed and sore, it suggests an imbalance mainly in Pitta dosha alongside some Kapha accumulation.

Firstly, the warmth of the teas is good, but try drinking herbal teas with liquorice root or ginger, which are traditionally used for soothing throat inflammation and clearing infection. Ginger can help reduce the irritating itchiness. If you can, make a tea with fresh ginger slices, simmered for about 10 minutes, strained, and consumed warm. Sip slowly.

Honey and lemon are indeed beneficial; combine a spoon of raw honey with a bit of lemon juice in warm water. The honey acts as a natural anti-bacterial, and lemon helps cut through excess Kapha buildup. Avoid excessive sour, spicy and salty foods until symptoms ease, as these can aggravate Pitta.

Gargling saltwater is widely recommended; use lukewarm water with a pinch of salt and gargle three to four times daily to reduce swelling. If you prefer, add a pinch of turmeric to the saltwater for its anti-inflammatory effects. Slight mistake here too: make sure it’s not too warm, to avoid further irritation.

Finally, maintaining your oral hygiene is crucial—gently brush your teeth and use a mild, gentle herbal mouthwash if that’s available to you, to keep bacterial levels in check. As much as you crave spicy foods, temporarily avoiding these may help your throat heal more swiftly.

While antibiotics are necessary, these natural approaches might speed up your recovery. If symptoms worsen or don’t improve, it’s important to follow up with your healthcare provider. Balancing rest and staying hydrated will support your body’s healing process. Safe recovery!
