Bilirubin levels can increase due to a variety of factors, and it’s understandable to feel concerned. In Ayurveda, we look at imbalances in the body’s doshas (vata, pitta, kapha) that can influence liver function. The liver, being a seat of pitta, is particularly sensitive to pitta imbalances. Improper digestion might also affect the body’s ability to process bilirubin, potentially leading to its buildup.
Your experience with a stomach virus could have had an impact. Viral infections can stress the liver temporarily and result in elevated bilirubin. This may not always present with severe symptoms immediately, which could explain feeling relatively normal apart from tiredness and slight jaundice.
To balance pitta and support liver function, consider incorporating cooling and bitter foods like cucumbers, leafy greens, and bitter gourds into your diet. Avoid spicy, oily, and fried foods as these can aggravate pitta. Ensure you’re well-hydrated with room-temperature or warm water. A decoction of turmeric and amla (Indian gooseberry) can help in detoxifying and balancing pitta dosha.
Stress management is crucial since stress can affect liver health. Techniques such as pranayama and meditation may help calm your system and potentially improve liver function. Pay attention to regular bowel movements, ensuring no constipation, as healthy elimination is vital for liver detoxification.
Given your family history and current symptoms, continue to follow up with your doctor for further investigations to address any serious underlying issues. Sometimes modern medical tests are needed for a clearer picture. If at any time your symptoms worsen, seek immediate medical attention.
