To reduce tan and improve skin complexion, addressing both external and internal factors can be beneficial. Externally, you can apply a paste made from turmeric powder and fresh yogurt—mix them into a paste and apply it to tanned areas daily. Leave it on for about 15-20 minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties, and yogurt contains lactic acid, which gently exfoliates the skin.
Internally, focus on balancing your doshas. If you find your skin excessively dry or flaky, you might be experiencing a vata imbalance. On the other hand, oily skin or pigmentation might indicate a pitta imbalance. So, incorporate foods that pacify the imbalanced dosha. For vata, consume warming foods like ghee, and cooked grains. For pitta, cooling foods like cucumber, mint, and coconut water can help.
Dietary-wise, a sattvic diet, rich in fresh vegetables and fruits, can improve skin tone and texture. Include plenty of hydrating fruits like watermelon and papaya, which aid in skin repair. Leafy greens, like spinach, can cleanse your blood, which reflects positively on skin health. Drinking at least 2-3 liters of water daily also helps to keep your skin hydrated and flushed of toxins.
Avoid processed foods, excessive oils, and too much spice, as these can aggravate your dosha imbalances and lead to skin issues. Instead, regular consumption of herbal teas like ginger or tulsi can also support digestion, which is directly related to skin health.
Practices like abhyanga (self-massage with oil) can improve circulation and lead to healthier, glowing skin. Choose oils like sesame for vata, or coconut for pitta. Finally, get adequate sleep to allow your body to repair and detoxify itself, which naturally benefits your skin. Always seek immediate medical attention for severe reactions or persistent skin issues.
