Post-Operative Scar and Abdominal Pain Concerns - #44358
I had a big operation 2023 and the scar is 40 cm on the front of my whole body. The scar is L-shaped, running from my sternum to my right side. Due to a bile duct tumor, my gallbladder, bile duct, and 40% of my liver were removed. I also developed a so-called "ruptured abdomen," and the scar reopened due to an infection. It remained open for two months and couldn't be stitched. Since then, I've had sharp pains and sometimes a burning sensation, like an iron pressing on my abdomen.

Addressing post-operative scars and abdominal discomfort involves focusing on wound healing, pain management, and improving overall digestive health. The present symptoms such as sharp pains and burning might be, as per Ayurvedic perspective arising from imbalances in Vata and Pitta doshas due to surgical intervention and infection.
For managing the scar, applying medicated oils known in Ayurveda for their healing properties could be beneficial. Mixing equal parts of lukewarm coconut oil and turmeric powder creates a soothing paste. Apply this daily to the scarred area to help with the skin’s natural healing process and reduce inflammation due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
The sharp pains and burning sensation you feel could signify aggravated Pitta leading to inflammation and Vata creating pain. Consider incorporating cooling and calming foods to your diet, such as cucumber, cilantro, and coconut water to soothe Pitta and maintain digestion. Also, ensure adequate hydration as it helps with healing and removes toxins that might aggravate pain.
To support general digestion and ensure Agni (digestive fire) isn’t impaired, try sipping warm water infused with fresh ginger and cumin seeds throughout the day. This aids in reducing any indigestion and bloating, aligning your digestive health after surgery.
Regarding lifestyle, practicing gentle Yogic asanas like Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclined Bound Angle Pose) can be effective as it helps alleviate discomfort by reducing tension in the abdominal muscles. However, engaging in intense physical activity should be postponed to avoid additional strain on the abdomen.
If the pain persists, given your significant surgical history, it’s critical to consult a healthcare professional immediately. While Ayurvedic interventions aid in handling symptomatology, corrective medical evaluation is crucial to rule out any complications. Always prioritize your safety by seeking professional guidance when in doubt.
