Hydration is indeed pivotal for managing kidney stones, but certain foods can also play a supportive role. In the Siddha-Ayurvedic perspective, it’s essential to address any vata and pitta imbalances, which often contribute to the formation of kidney stones. Your goal would be to include foods that increase urine output and help dissolve the stones.
Cucumber and watermelon are two excellent choices as they’re hydrating and can help flush out toxins. You could consume them as a snack or make a juice—have about a cup in the morning on an empty stomach. Remember not to add sugar.
Lemon juice mixed with water is beneficial due to its citrate content, which helps break down calcium-based stones. A small glass of warm water mixed with the juice of half a lemon, taken daily in the early morning, can be quite effective.
Barley water is another traditional remedy. Boil barley with water (1 part barley to 4 parts water) and drink the strained liquid. It can help regulate water balance and reduce stone size.
If your prakriti leans towards kapha, avoid dairy and excessive salt and sugar. Moderation in protein intake, particularly animal proteins, is advised to prevent any buildup of calcium.
Include herbal teas like coriander or nettle leaf tea, which are known to be diuretics and support kidney health. Prepare them by steeping the leaves in hot water for about 10 minutes, and consume up two cups daily.
If symptoms like severe pain, blood in urine, or fever occur, seek immediate medical attention as these might indicate a need for professional evaluation. Remember to balance your diet and practice moderation for sustained benefits.
