My mother of age around 50 years has fatty liver, she can't eat spicy and oily food. Otherwise it causes her stomach burn less oftenly acidity too. Sometimes she complains of bloating and flatulence too. She do have hemorrhoids too. She can't eat anything that is hot/warm in nature like ginger, dry fruits, dates etc. Recently she got H pylori infection so we switched her to bottled mineral water otherwise used to have RO at home too but to be precautious switched to that.

Doctors’ responses

Namaste Sandhia, Your mother’s combination of fatty liver, bloating, acidity, hemorrhoids, and H. pylori infection indicates an aggravated Pitta and Vata imbalance affecting her digestive system and liver function. Here’s a holistic Ayurvedic approach: 1. Liver Support and Detoxification Arogyavardhini Vati: Supports liver function and helps manage fatty liver. Take under supervision. Punarnava: Reduces liver swelling and bloating. Consume as a decoction or capsule. Guduchi (Giloy): A potent herb for detoxifying the liver and improving digestion. 2. Digestive Relief Avipattikar Churna: Balances Pitta, reduces acidity, and alleviates stomach burn and bloating. Take before meals with warm water. Jeera and Ajwain Decoction: Boil cumin and carom seeds in water and drink after meals to reduce bloating and flatulence. 3. H. Pylori Management Amalaki (Amla): Cools the stomach, promotes healing, and reduces stomach acidity. Take as fresh juice or powder. Licorice (Mulethi): Soothes stomach lining irritation and inflammation. 4. Hemorrhoid Support Triphala Churna: Acts as a gentle laxative and improves bowel regularity to reduce hemorrhoid symptoms. Kumari (Aloe Vera): Soothes the digestive tract and reduces inflammation. 5. Dietary and Lifestyle Adjustments Avoid fried, spicy, and heavy foods. Focus on soft, easy-to-digest foods like kichadi (mung dal and rice), fresh vegetables, and fruits like pomegranate. Drink warm water with fennel seeds to ease digestion. Avoid stress and practice light yoga and pranayama (e.g., Sheetali pranayama for cooling). Ensure any herbal formulations are taken under supervision, especially considering her BP condition. Regular follow-ups with an Ayurvedic practitioner are recommended.

For your mother’s condition, it's essential to focus on balancing her digestive fire (Agni) and addressing her liver health gently. Ayurvedic remedies like Triphala can help with detoxification and support liver function. Since she cannot tolerate spicy or oily foods, incorporating cooling foods like cucumbers, melons, and leafy greens can provide nourishment without aggravating her condition. Aloe vera juice can help soothe acidity and promote digestion. For bloating and flatulence, fennel and cumin seeds can be helpful, as they are gentle on the stomach. Additionally, she can benefit from liver-supporting herbs like Turmeric and Bhringraj in small doses, which are known for their anti-inflammatory and liver-protective qualities. To manage H. pylori, Ayurvedic herbs like Guduchi and Amalaki are known to promote gut health and help with bacterial balance. Since she has hemorrhoids, incorporating fiber-rich foods and ensuring regular bowel movements will be essential. Avoiding heavy meals late in the evening and opting for a balanced, easily digestible diet would also benefit her. It’s crucial to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner to tailor a specific plan considering her sensitivities and health conditions.

With your mom's situation, it sounds like a few digestive imbalances are happening, along with the underlying issues like the fatty liver and hemorrhoids. Let's take it a step at a time. First things first, her digestive fire or "agni" seems to be a bit weak given the bloating, acidity, and H. pylori issue. All these suggest an imbalance maybe in Pitta dosha. She should focus on soothing, cooling, and balancing this dosha. Bitter, astringent, and sweet tastes help here, so foods like cooked leafy greens, fruits like pears and apples, and whole grains like rice and quinoa would be good additions to her diet. Avoid spicy, acidic, and oily foods as you've been doing - they just tend to worsen Pitta issues. Same thing goes for alcohol, coffee and deep fried foods. For the fatty liver, including milk thistle (if suitable) could help, but more practically, she can incorporate turmeric in her meals. Turmeric has a lot of healing properties, she can just add a pinch to her vegetables. Tripahala could also be beneficial since it helps in gently cleansing the colon, supporting liver function and digestion. She could take a teaspoon in warm water before bed. When it comes to water, just ensure it's room temperature or slightly warm. Cold water can further dampen digestion. For meals, eating mindfully at regular intervals would definitely help strengthen her agni. Smaller meals more frequently can prevent heaviness and flatulence later. And ah, about hemorrhoids, it's crucial to maintain bowel regularity. Keeping hydrated and having fibrous foods would be crucial here. If symptoms worsen, specially related to H. pylori, do check with a gastroenterologist as they might need closer monitoring. Oh, and her lifestyle! Encourage her to have a routine with gentle exercises like yoga. It's key for both mental and physical health. Senior-friendly, of course!
