Cough and difficulty in breathing - #20457

Zareef Iqbal

My daughter, who is six years old, first has a cough and then difficulty breathing in humid areas. My house is about fifteen km from the beach. In the winter season, when it is dry, she is completely fine. She has been undergoing treatment from various doctors and healers for the past three years, but there is no specific cure.

Understanding your daughter's symptoms requires a bit of digging into both external and internal factors that might be at play. Coughing followed by difficulty in breathing, particularly in humid areas, can often point to respiratory sensitivities or imbalances that Ayurveda refers to as a disturbance in the "prana vata" which governs the respiratory system. Especially, proximity to the sea and high humidity can exacerbate these symptoms. In terms of Ayurveda, it sounds like an imbalance in the "Kapha" dosha, which controls stability and mucus formation in the body. Humidity tends to aggravate Kapha, possibly leading to an accumulation of mucus, which could explain the breathing difficulties. First off, you want to minimize cold and damp conditions within your home, try using a dehumidifier to maintain balanced humidity levels, especially in her room. Diet can have a significant impact on her condition. Encourage her to consume warm, cooked foods that are easy to digest. Integrating warming spices like ginger, turmeric, and black pepper into her meals may help balance the Kapha. Avoid cold foods and beverages, dairy, and sweets as they can increase Kapha. Practicing breathing exercises like pranayama can also benefit her. Simple techniques like Anulom Vilom can gently improve lung function and offer relief. But ensure she practices these under supervised guidance appropriate for her age. Lastly, consult with a trained Ayurvedic practitioner in your area. They can offer personalized treatment, maybe recommend herbal formulations such as Trikatu or Sitopaladi, under their supervision. Used with professional guidance, these can potentially reduce the symptoms further. Regular consultations will help track her progress and make any necessary adjustments to her regimen. Remember, while Ayurveda can provide supportive care and relief, acting swiftly to seek medical attention during acute breathing difficulties is crucial. It sounds like she needs a blended approach, integrating both traditional therapies and modern medical interventions.
