is curd good for acidity and gas - #23704

Natalie

I am struggling with some major acidity and gas issues lately. It started months ago, like at first I thought it was just something I ate, but it became almost a daily thing. I get this burning sensation in my chest, and then boom, the bloating hits me. I've tried different foods and even some antacids, but they're not really helping much. I read somewhere that curd is good for acidity and gas, but I’m not sure if that’s true or just one of those myths floating around. I typically don’t eat diary too much, because I heard it can be heavy on the stomach and then I worry about the gas even more! Can anyone share if curd is good for acidity and gas from their own experience? I mean, should I be adding it in my diet or would that just make things worse? Kinda scared to try it honestly, but I’ve heard some great things about probiotics in curd and how they can help digestion. Anyone have some insight?

Curd, particularly when it's fresh and made from cow’s milk, can be a beneficial addition to your diet when dealing with acidity and gas, albeit with certain precautions. In Ayurveda, indigestion, acidity, and excessive gas are often attributed to an imbalance in the pitta or vata dosha. Curd may help balance vata dosha due to its grounding and nourishing qualities. However, it’s important to use it correctly to avoid any adverse effects, especially during such conditions. First, fresh curd is sweet and has a cooling effect on the body, which can temporarily soothe the lining of the stomach and help in reducing acidity. The probiotics present in curd promote the growth of good bacteria, enhancing the digestive process, and potentially reducing bloating and gas issues in the long run. Despite these benefits, curd taken incorrectly may aggravate symptoms . Avoid consuming curd at night, as it can increase mucus production and isn’t beneficial for digestion during this period. During daytime, curd can be consumed but it's best to beat it well and include spices like cumin and coriander, which aid in digestion. Adding a pinch of asafoetida (hing) can also be particularly helpful in reducing gas formation. It’s crucial not to mix curd with sour fruits or citrus foods, as they can turn it heavy on the stomach. Opt instead for lukewarm dishes like kadhi, a traditional blend of curd and chickpea flour with spices, which is lighter and easier on digestion. It's crucial, however, to monitor how your body reacts to curd. Not every body responds the same; some people may have a mild lactose intolerance leading to increased gas. As you are already cautious of dairy, you should start with small quantities to observe any changes. If you notice adverse effects, it may be prudent to consider other alternatives rich in probiotics, such as buttermilk or fermented ricewater, taken with supportive spices. Your condition, having persisted as long as you mentioned, should ideally be assessed by a healthcare professional to confirm there are no underlying concerns. Balancing the dosa, maintaining a proper eating schedule, and reducing stress can also positively impact digestive health. Remember that personalizing diet plan based on your prakriti or the underlying balance of your dosha can be more effective. Do consider seeking consultation with an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner to address the root cause of your digestive issues for a tailored approach.
