is it ok to eat curd at night - #23714

Caleb

I am really struggling with my digestion lately, and I've been hearing mixed opinions on food, especially about whether is it ok to eat curd at night. My mom always said curd is great for cooling the body—like, she’d have it with dinner all the time. But recently, I started experiencing bloating and some weird stomach cramps after having it in the evening, so now I’m second-guessing everything! 😩 I tried having it during the day, and I felt fine, but I feel like curd at night is a huge no-no for some people. Is it ok to eat curd at night, or am I just overthinking this? It’s so confusing, like sometimes I’m okay eating it, and other times, not at all. Also, does it make a difference if the curd is plain or flavored? I just wanna enjoy my meals without feeling yucky later! Any help or thoughts would be super appreciated!

In Ayurveda, digestion is a fascinatingly intricate process, and curd or yogurt indeed plays a unique role in it. Eating curd at night can be a bit tricky because as per traditional Ayurvedic wisdom, curd has a cold and heavy nature which doesn't often harmonize well with the body's digestion at night. At nighttime, our digestive fire, or agni, naturally slows down. You mentioned experiencing bloating and cramps, which are symptoms that may point towards impaired digestion. This, along with symptoms, reflects an imbalance, possibly of the Vata dosha. Keeping this in mind, when you consume curd in the evening, it can possibly further aggravate these symptoms because it can increase Kapha and Vata. Your observation of feeling fine having it during the day makes sense, as your digestion is stronger during lunchtime, aligning with peak Pitta dosha. If you do have curd at night and sometimes feel okay, it might be linked to the condition of your digestive system at that moment. Even though Ayurveda suggests moderation, in some cases, the constitution of the individual also plays a big role. To make curd more digestible, try adding a pinch of black pepper or ginger—these can aid in balancing the potential adverse effects of curd. Whether plain or flavored, the base property of curd remains the same. Flavored curd could have additional sugars or additives that might further impact digestion. So, aim for plain curd and consider it paired with warming spices to boost agni. If your digestive system is commonly sensitive, assess the quantity and frequency of curd in your diet. You might try opt for buttermilk (churned with some spices) in the evening instead, as it is considerably lighter and easier on digestion, offering similar benefits without the cooling effects of curd. Think about checking the quantity consumed, too, as even small reduction might soothe your stomach. And make sure to keep an eye out for other dietary patterns or stressors that might also be affecting your digestion.
