can yoga increase height - #24020

Ryan

I am really curious about something that’s been on my mind lately. I’m 17 and have always felt kind of short compared to my friends. I’ve tried various stretches, but I heard somewhere that “can yoga increase height”?? My cousin swears by her yoga practice and says it’s helped her feel taller and even more flexible, but I don’t know if I really believe that! Last month, I started going to a yoga class and honestly, it makes me feel great, but I can't shake off the doubt. Sometimes after a session, I feel a bit more elongated, but then I wonder if it’s just my imagination. Two weeks ago, I measured myself again and...ugh, still the same! Do you really think that yoga can help or is it just a myth? I would love to know if there are specific poses people say work best for height or something else? And if yoga increases height, how long before I might see any results? Thanks in advance!!!

Yoga, while it doesn't literally increase the skeletal height, may help you feel taller and more aligned due to its impact on your posture and flexibility. As an Ayurveda practitioner, this aligns with the holistic view where balance, posture, and nervous system health all play roles in how you feel and perceive your body. Yoga can indeed provide a range of benefits that contribute to a more balanced body, potentially giving a sense of increased height. Regular practice leads to improved posture by strengthening core muscles, elongating the spine, and aligning the body. This can help undo some slouching or poor posture habits, making you appear taller. Poses that can be particularly helpful include Tadasana (Mountain Pose), Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), Virabhadrasana (Warrior Pose), and Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog). It's also crucial to consider your Prakriti or constitution. In Ayurveda, different bodies have different needs. Those with a Vata dosha (typically light and airy) may benefit from grounding poses, while Pitta types (more fiery and intense) might thrive with a cooling, calming practice. Kapha dosha individuals benefit from vigorating and dynamic asanas. It's natural to feel discouraged if you don't see physical changes right away. Yoga is as much about mental and internal well-being as it is about physical posture. The benefits you've been feeling, like feeling more elongated after a session, are part of this journey. While it might not change your measured height, over time, with consistent practice, you might notice this sensation becomes more stable and noticeable, often taking some months. Balance your diet with foods that support your body’s constitution – for example, calcium-rich foods to support bone health. Stretch daily, practice pranayama, and maintain an active lifestyle. It's vital to keep expectations realistic and to embrace the overall benefits that yoga provides. While it's unlikely to cause a dramatic increase in height, it can be a valuable part of a healthy lifestyle that maximizes your potential.
