is curd good for stomach upset - #24103

Brooklyn

I am really confused about something... For the past week, I’ve been dealing with this annoying stomach upset that just won’t go away! Like, I tried everything from ginger tea to peppermint, but nothing seems to work. My friend keeps telling me that curd can really help with stomach issues, but is curd good for stomach upset? Like, should I be eating it daily or just on good days? I read somewhere that curd is good for digestion, but I’m not sure if that applies when your stomach is upset too. Last night, I even tried curd mixed with some honey, hoping it would be soothing but honestly, it just made my belly feel kinda weird. Maybe I added too much? I just want to know if curd is good for stomach upset overall, or if I should steer clear of it. Anyone with similar experiences or advice on how to incorporate it without making things worse? Thanks a ton!

Actually, using curd during a stomach upset can be a bit tricky, and its suitability depends on your individual situation and constitution. Ayurveda provides some guidance on this, but it emphasizes personalizing healing methods based on one's dosha and digestive state. If your stomach upset involves symptoms like bloating, gas, or you're feeling overly heavy and sluggish, curd might not be the best choice right now. It is generally heavy in nature and can further aggravate these symptoms if consumed inappropriately. Curd increases Kapha, and in conditions where Kapha is already high, it might not be helpful. On the other hand, if you have loose stools or diarrhea, and your agni (digestive fire) is imbalanced, certain preparations of curd can be beneficial. Yogurt has probiotics, which can aid in gut health, but when you have an upset stomach, it’s crucial to consume it right. It’s often recommended to opt for buttermilk instead, which is lighter and easier to digest. You can try blending a small amount of fresh homemade curd with water and a pinch of rock salt or roasted cumin powder to make traditional buttermilk. Sipping this throughout the day can be lighter on your digestion. Regarding your experience with honey and curd, while both are beneficial individually in Ayurveda, they might not always suit everyone's system. Honey, when combined with cold curd, could have an opposing effect, leading to discomfort. Maybe try curd on its own or significantly reduce the amount of honey. In terms of regular consumption, avoid having curd at night, or when feeling particularly sluggish or mucous-heavy. If you’re feeling your stomach is still sensitive, it might be worth sticking to lighter and warm foods like rice gruel, or simple vegetable broths until your stomach stabilizes. If symptoms persist or worsen, consulting a healthcare professional is important as there could be an underlying condition that needs addressing.
