does ashwagandha lower estrogen - #24455

Allison

I am dealing with some health concerns lately, and I keep hearing that ashwagandha is like a miracle herb, but I am kinda confused about it. A couple of months ago, I started noticing some weird symptoms, mood swings, and even, um, irregular periods. I did some blood tests, and my doctor said my estrogen levels were slightly high, which isn't really what I expected at all! I started researching remedies and came across ashwagandha, and there's this chatter about whether ashwagandha lower estrogen levels. Like, does ashwagandha lower estrogen, for real? If it can help balance hormones, could it potentially help me? I mean, I don't want to just dive into taking it without understanding. Anyone here had experience with ashwagandha, like does ashwagandha lower estrogen for them? Also, I’ve read about side effects and stuff so I’m a bit nervous. Any advice would be super helpful!!

Ashwagandha is indeed a fascinating herb in Ayurveda, celebrated for its adaptogenic properties. However, the notion that it directly lowers estrogen levels is not firmly established in modern research, though it is known for its general hormone balancing traits. In Ayurveda, we regard Ashwagandha as a Rasayana, which means it rejuvenates and helps balance the body’s energies or doshas, particularly Vata and Kapha. For hormonal imbalances, it indirectly aids by reducing stress levels, improving sleep, and enhancing the body’s overall resilience.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, high estrogen levels causing mood swings and irregular periods may also be linked to an imbalance in your doshas, particularly Pitta and Vata. Our approach would focus on nurturing balance through diet, lifestyle, and herbal support.

If you’re considering ashwagandha, there are a few recommendations to keep in mind:

1. Choosing Quality: Ensure the ashwagandha you choose is of high quality and preferably organic. This ensures it’s free from additives and preservatives.

2. Start Low: Begin with a smaller dose, about 300 mg of ashwagandha extract once a day after meals. Observe how your body responds before any increase.

3. Timing: Consume it ideally in the evening; it’s known for promoting better sleep and restfulness.

4. Dietary Considerations: Balance Pitta by including cooling foods like aloe vera juice and plenty of greens in your diet. Keep spicy, fried, and hot foods to a minimum.

5. Mindful Practices: Incorporate some daily yoga or breathing exercises to help regulate the balance between your body and mind.

Regarding side effects, ashwagandha is generally well-tolerated, but it can occasionally cause digestive upset or mild headaches in sensitive individuals. Always consult your healthcare provider if you’re on other medications or have underlying conditions.

Given your current health concerns, it may be beneficial to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner who can provide more personalized guidance, ensuring that you address root causes and achieve balance holistically. Remember, Ayurveda emphasizes long-term health through holistic and personalized care.
