does curd cause constipation - #24480

Logan

I am really confused about this thing with curd. I’ve been eating a lot of curd lately, like every day. It’s supposed to be good for digestion, right? Well, I started noticing that I’m feeling kinda bloated and, honestly, I haven’t been able to go to the bathroom as easily as I used to. I dunno if it’s just one of those things or if it actually is something to do with the curd. Does curd cause constipation, or could it be something else I’m eating? I mean, I thought probiotics in curd were a good thing, but now I’m wondering if I need to cut back. I’ve talked to a few friends and they say different things—like some say it’s fine, and others swear it makes you “backed up.” There’s also this whole idea about dairy, like does everyone react to it the same? Help me out, please! Should I ditch the curd or is there some way to balance it out?

Understanding your concern about curd and its impact on digestion doesn't need to be complicated. Curd, known as dahi in Ayurveda, is generally praised for its digestive benefits, thanks to probiotics. However, its impact can vary depending on individual constitution (prakriti) and how it's consumed. First, let's consider your dosha. If you're predominantly a Kapha or Vata type, excessive consumption of curd might lead to constipation and bloating. Kapha could increase due to the heavy, cold, and sticky nature of curd, while Vata may get aggravated due to the possible fermentation if curd's not fresh. For Pitta, curd might be balancing, but not in excess, as it tends to increase heat. The it's not just about curd. The rest of your diet plays a role, too. Are you consuming processed foods, refined sugars, or heavy meals along with curd? These may contribute to slower digestion. Also, how you're using curd influences its impact. Consuming it at night might be more likely to cause digestive issues than during the day. Freshness matters; always opt for homemade curd, and ensure that it's consumed within a day or two. Balancing curd with spices can help enhance its benefits—add roasted cumin or black pepper, or even a pinch of rock salt. Incorporating it into a balanced diet, say with fibrous foods like fruits and vegetables, might aid digestion and prevent constipation. Very importantly, moderation is key. If you're having curd every day and noticing these symptoms, perhaps consider reducing it to a few times a week, and observe changes. Alternatively, indulge in buttermilk, which provides the benefits of curd but is lighter on the stomach. If symptoms persist despite these adjustments, then it might be worth exploring other factors or checking with an Ayurvedic practitioner to conduct a thorough assessment. Remember, Ayurveda is about harmony and finding what works best for your body.
