is hormonal imbalance curable - #24790

Audrey

I am really confused and worried about this whole hormonal imbalance thing. I turned 35 this year and since then, my body feels like it’s playing a cruel joke on me. I keep getting these mood swings, hot flashes, and my period is seriously unpredictable. Like, one month I'm late and the other, I can barely keep track. Even my skin’s been going bonkers with blemishes showing up more often than not. A friend mentioned that Ayurveda might help with hormonal imbalance but I’m not really sure. Is hormonal imbalance curable? I’ve tried some lifestyle changes and even yoga, but nothing seems to be sticking long-term. I looked up a bunch of stuff online, but it's just so overwhelming! I genuinely just want to feel like myself again. Can herbs or diets really help balance hormones? Is there something specific I should look for or avoid? Any thoughts?

Doctors' responses

Hormonal imbalances, particularly around mid-30s, can certainly present those challenging symptoms you described. Ayurveda can indeed offer practical support in managing and potentially resolving these imbalances by addressing root causes. While it’s important to mention that curing hormonal imbalance may necessitate an integrative approach, Ayurveda can complement other treatments effectively.

In Ayurveda, we look at your specific constitution, or ‘prakriti’, to find a personalized balance. Typically, imbalances might arise from disturbed doshas – primarily Vata and Kapha when it comes to hormones. This can lead to symptoms like mood swings, irregular periods, and skin issues. Diet, lifestyle, and herbs based on your unique ‘prakriti’ can significantly aid in rebalancing these doshas.

Begin with your digestive fire, ‘agni’, which influences hormone health. Consider herbs like Ashwagandha and Shatavari – they are known adaptogens, helping the body cope with stress and balance hormones. Consume them as directed by an Ayurvedic practitioner, usually as a powder or capsule.

Diet plays another key role. Favor foods that pacify Vata and Kapha: warm, cooked meals with spices like ginger, cumin, and turmeric. Avoid cold, processed, or overly spicy foods, as they may aggravate the imbalance. Ghee is beneficial, it nourishes and harmonizes the body and mind.

Lifestyle adjustments are equally critical. Establish regular daily routines, as Vatas especially thrive on structure. Gentle yoga and pranayama (breathing exercises) support hormonal health by reducing stress and promoting circulation. Ensure enough rest; sleep profoundly impacts hormone regulation.

External treatments, such as Abhyanga – a self-massage with warm sesame oil can further balance doshas and alleviate stress. Consider consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can tailor all these to your needs and ensure no potential conflicts with existing health conditions.

Remember, while Ayurveda offers profound insights, maintaining follow-ups with healthcare providers ensures a comprehensive approach to your hormonal health. Always communicate any new treatments you’re considering with your doctors to ensure they’re safe for you.
