is besan good for kidney patients - #24830

Scarlett

I am really trying to figure out if besan is good for kidney patients, cause my dad was just diagnosed with some kidney issues last month, and we are all freaking out a little. You know, he has been feeling super fatigued, and the doctors said his kidney function is not where it should be. He used to love eating besan chilla every weekend, but now I'm scared that he shouldn't eat it at all! Like, is besan good for kidney patients, or should we completely cut it out? I mean, I read somewhere that it has protein and stuff, which sounds good, but I'm worried it might have too much potassium or something?? I don’t want to mess up his diet more than it already is. We want him to feel better, but with all the information out there, it’s a bit overwhelming. What do you all think? Is it safe for him to have besan or should I try to find alternatives? Any experiences or advice would really help here! Thanks tons!

Besan, or chickpea flour, is indeed a nutritious food, filled with protein and fiber which makes it appear beneficial at first glance. However, for individuals with kidney issues, the situation can get a bit more complicated. It's important to consider not just the nutrient composition, but also how it interacts with the specific needs and restrictions of someone with impaired kidney function. In Ayurvedic terms, when considering dosha imbalances, besan could potentially aggravate Vata due to its dry and heavy nature. But beyond Ayurveda, clinically speaking, your concerns about potassium are quite valid. Chickpeas, being the source of besan, indeed have a moderate to high potassium content. For someone with reduced kidney function, managing potassium intake is crucial. The compromised kidneys may be less efficient at excreting excess potassium, leading to an accumulation in the blood which can pose risks, like heart complications. While besan can be a source of plant-based protein which might seem beneficial, it might be wise for your dad to limit or moderate its intake, especially until you get a precise assessment from his healthcare provider about his potassium levels and clearance rates. Have a discussion with your dad's dietitian or nephrologist— they can offer tailored advice taking into account his overall dietary needs. If you're looking for alternatives, explore foods lower in potassium that can provide some of the nutrients found in besan. You could consider mung bean flour or rice flour, which are generally lower in potassium and might be easier for the kidneys to manage. Always ensure any dietary changes align with professional medical guidance; it's imperative not to venture too far with dietary changes without consulting with his healthcare team, given their knowledge about the specific nuances of his kidney function. Patient safety always comes first.
