which is the best honey in india - #24867

Gabriel

I am feeling really confused about honey lately! I’ve been trying to switch to more natural foods for my family, especially since my kids keep having coughs and allergies. I’ve read that honey can help, but I’m just not sure which is the best honey in India. I mean, there are so many types! Like, I went to this local shop and they had these fancy jars of honey, but some of them were labeled wildflower, while others said eucalyptus or something else. And then I saw some online saying raw honey is totally different from what’s in the supermarkets, which makes me worry that I might be giving them the wrong stuff. Ugh! My brother told me his friend swears by a certain brand, but I’m hesitant because I don't want to spend money on something if it’s not really effective. Is there a specific type or brand that is considered the best honey in India for health? Any tips on how to choose? Thank you!

Choosing the best honey can indeed be confounding with so many options! In Ayurveda, honey is highly revered as “Madhu” and carries immense health benefits, especially for respiratory issues like coughs and allergies. When looking for the best honey in India, there are a few key aspects worth considering.

First, raw honey is generally more beneficial than processed versions found in supermarkets. Raw honey, being in its natural state, retains more of its nutritional and therapeutic properties. When honey is heated or heavily processed, it may lose enzymes, antioxidants, and vitamins which are crucial for its medicinal effects.

Your mention of wildflower versus eucalyptus is insightful. Different floral sources can endow honey with distinct qualities. Wildflower honey, which comes from the nectar of various flowers, tends to have a rich taste and can be good for general purposes. Eucalyptus honey can be slightly medicinal, offering benefits for respiratory health.

If you’re inclined towards specific recommendations, you might explore honey from the forests in the Nilgiris or the Himalayas, known for their purity and distinctive properties. Such honey is typically collected from various flora in those lush regions and regarded for their pristine quality. Brands like Dabur, Saffola, or honey from local organic farms could be considered, but always ensure they are marked as organic raw honey, if possible.

When selecting honey, check for crystallization. While crystallization doesn’t indicate poor quality but natural purity, its rate can depend on the flower source of the honey. Authentic honey often tends to crystallize over time.

It’s advisable to buy honey from reputable sources to ensure it’s not diluted or adulterated. Focus on local or small-scale beekeepers who can vouch for their honey’s quality.

For helping with your family’s coughs and allergies, a teaspoon of raw honey mixed with some warm water and a squeeze of fresh ginger could support the immunity. And Ayurveda recommends consuming it in the morning or before bedtime.

If allergies persist, consider checking with a physician to explore if there’s a need for other interventions.
